3 biggest problems so far

Special teams play

Lack of # 2 receiver

Mental errors(missed tackles, being caught out of position, occasional rookie coach mistakes, dumb penalties)

I don't know what to do about special teams but the mental errors have improved some, now we either need to get Lafell a personal tudor(Ricky proehl?) like Weinke did for Newton in helping him learn the playbook.

That's my take on it, what do you guys think?

I hear alot about the lack of a #2 receiver and while that may be true its not a huge problem. We put up great offensive numbers. Like it or not we should be winning games putting up 27 points vs the aints. Fix the boneheaded mistakes and tighten up the d a bit and we are a contender.

The saints average 31 points a game. Our D allowed 20 of those points or 17 if we didn't gift them that field goal.

We are putting up huge offensive numbers in spite of Naane so yes he is a huge problem.do you know how many drives have stalled because of Naane?

Against Chicago Hester killed us, Rodgers and Brees are 2 of the best ever and they hurt everyone.

Basically our D is over achieving while Naane is underachieving for a # 2

I have more than three.

Defense:

Defensive line not getting any pass rush

LB's not making enough plays

Corners not covering, wide-open receivers

Run defense seemed improve, but still has me worried

Offense:

#2 receiver

Not enough use of the TE's

Bombs on 3rd and short yardage.

Poor coaching. If I were a totally unbiased observer and I watched these games, I would say there is no reason we shouldn't have at least 2, or arguably 3 wins. Sure the defense is suspect, and the O-line is mediocre at best, but I think this team could be winning games. We were idiotic to kick to Hester (twice no less), the Lions cracked that riddle (surprise! They're 5-0 now!). And we played WAY too passive with the lead against the Saints with 6 minutes left. If we get in field goal range, we lock up a victory. Instead we pussy-foot it, punt and give Drew "Super Bowl MVP" Brees the ball with 6 minutes on the clock and 80 yards between him and victory. Stupid coaching moves if you ask me. Rivera better grow some nuts. Because with every game being decided by 7 points or less, the law of averages says that half the time we should be getting the win. To lose 4 out of 5 shootouts means that we are flat out not aggressive enough.

Better than running a draw right up the middle on 3rd and 12 and giving up. That's what I am used to.

Honestly mental errors, penalties, and special team are what are holding us back. Giving teams points and not getting points when we have the opportunity.

Going for a hail mary on 3&2 is just dumb.

1. Turnovers

Our offense is one of the best in the NFL right now and there's no reason it's not going to stay that way the entire season. Therefore when the offense turns the ball over the entire team takes a huge blow. Our defense is not what wins us games, so the offense must not put them on the field more often than they already are during a normal game. Giving opposing teams the ball for free is a quick way to lose.

To win games we have to first stop beating ourselves, and the turnovers are a huge reason we don't have more wins. We essentially spotted the Bears and Saints a free TD to start the game in each of the past 2 weeks. When you don't make the team earn and work for their points you can expect to lose. Pick 6's or putting an offense in the red zone automatically are game breakers. And turnovers were devastating against the Packers as well. You can't give great teams like the Saints and Packers free points and several extra chances to hurt us.

2. Run defense

Even though this is a passing league you still have to have a great run defense. Every team is going to want to pass the ball and take shots down field anyway, so if you can't stop the run it makes it that much easier for them. When teams run the ball all of the time they're less likely to turn it over and it also is more damaging on a defense and wears them out when the defense is being bowled over constantly. When a team can run the ball on another at will they know they'll be able to take shots down the field any time they want since the defense is always going to be scared to get gashed for big gains on the ground. If offenses know we can't stop the run they've got it made.

3. Special Teams

Special teams sees much less time during a game, but it's equally as important as offense and defense as we know all too well. Blocked FG's and kickoff/punt returns for huge yardage and TDs are extreme shifts in momentum for a team. When a team can score without having to run an offensive play then they're not getting tired as they continue to rest on the sidelines, they're not risking a turnover, they're not working much at all. Conversely if a team is allowing the other to get points like that they're really putting themselves behind the 8-ball. Huge special team plays just kill a team and they are extremely demoralizing. We have to stop making it easy for other teams.

----------

Football is all about taking away what another team does best if you want to beat them. When you let teams have extra possessions, gash you on the ground, or score without having to even use their offense then it's likely you'll struggle to find wins. The Panthers have to stop making it easier for the opposition. We've proven that we can come back from behind and that our offense is amazing, but if we stop hurting ourselves the wins will come much easier.

    • Ok but is the alternative? He is not going to sign for a lesser contract, so then do you release him? We did that with Burns... see how that is working out. You can save the cap but you still need to replace the player. You can argue that we should have be preparing to replace Horn when his deal came up but we dealt those picks to get a QB.  Im curious to know how you would have handled it differently..
    • Perhaps you are correct but it has been a long time since the Panthers had a WR core that scared anyone and this could be part of the problem.  They finally found someone with Moore and the fans complained nonstop that he wasn't a true number 1 and perhaps the front office agreed and why he was traded.  If Warren is there at number 8, that's going to be the pick.
