Peyton Manning may get his 5 MVP and never take a snap!

Let me preface this by saying I've liked the Colts since Manning's time there, and hate the Pats. This isn't an attack on the team or the fans...

But I hope this season teaches some clubs (like us) some hard lessons about building teams and long term success.

Compare the 2008 Patriots to this year's Colts.

2008, Tom Brady goes down in game one. Matt Cassel comes in and leads them to an 11-5 record, which only causes them to miss the playoffs by a fluke happenstance of NFL tie breaking rules. In fact:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_New_England_Patriots_season

they were the first 11-win team since the expansion to a 12-team playoff in 1990 to not make the playoffs, as well as only the second team since the NFL expanded to a 16-game regular season in 1978.

The Pats kept the momentum going by virtue of system coaching and damn good GM'ing.

This year's Colts are 0-5, and no one fears them without Manning. I'm actually looking forward to the win when we go up there later in the year.

Jim Irsay and Bill Polian rested on their laurels in Peyton Manning. Jim Caldwell inherited Dungy's work, and hasn't coached them nearly as well. Without Manning, they are all being exposed as not having a plan for long term, not having an emergency plan for injuries, and relying on one man's ability to carry a team.

It's a shame really. If the Colts had built a team around Manning like the Steelers or the Packers, who knows how many rings he would have.

The whole situation has me feeling sorry for you Colts fans.

It's all a conspiracy. Remember when Manning talked Luck into staying in college? Now you have Manning have a "phantom" injury where he is out for the season. This is nothing but a franchise tanking the season and letting loose with their great QB. Oh yeah, Manning will be back next year to coach up Luck. Just watch....

    • Demetrius Knight is a steal at this point. He is flying under the radar but Luke Kuechly and Mike Rucker voluntarily brought him up in their interviews with the Panthers. He is smart, instinctive, and violent. There is a lot of chatter of Jalon Walker possibly being considered at 4 with Patriots and Jaguars at 5. If those teams are considering him at that high in the draft, we shouldn't complain picking him up at 8. Teams who interviewed Walker says his football IQ is equivalent to a defensive coordinator. I would be thrilled with Walker.
    • Getting a general one going in the main forum a week ahead of the draft. Take this all with a grain of salt.  This stuff usually ends up wildly different; but truths are peppered in.   Notes as of late: The common top-4, barring trades: 1-Ward, 2-Hunter, 3-Carter, 4-Campbell (I do wonder if NYG take calls) Giants are seeing Shedeur once more but still sounds like they're leaning Carter (Maybe trading up from 34?) Jeanty to the Jaguars is starting to pick up legitimate steam.  Vegas odds have dramatically increased, Brugler and a few others have switched him as their JAX choice at 5.   If that happens, the Raiders could very well be eyeing Jalon Walker Jets choice to come down to Graham vs. Warren vs. Membou (if all 3 end up available) Panthers have been linked to both UGA guys, mostly Jalon Walker.  Buuut do wonder what happens if Graham is there.
