just a few things i found about him. sounds like he could be good. dude is getting a lot of hype after the proday. considering, though, the number of teams that showed up for the proday....the hype might be deserved.

he might go as early as round one so he might be our first pick if he's still around.

I got a chance to take a look at San Jose State defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert yesterday. All I can say is that this kid is a special talent. I really feel that if he lands with the right team at the next level that he could have a Pro Bowl-type of effect in the NFL. Gilbert, in my opinion, is a current second rounder and could easily land in the late-first if he has a good Combine, which should be expected. Gilbert is one of the most explosive athletes that I’ve seen in the past few years. His explosion can be seen here, as he literally jumps out of a pool from an underwater start. I’m telling you that you need to keep an eye on this player. Think of a much better version of Kentwan Balmer who went in the first round last year.

Overview

The 2008 WAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year -- with an eye-popping 22 tackles for loss -- Gilbert was characterized by some as a product of the Spartans' aggressive defense until, that is, he proved to be arguably the most dominant presence at the East-West Shrine Game. The question for scouts now isn't whether Gilbert can play, but at which position to utilize his unique combination of size and athletic ability. Gilbert signed with San Jose State as a 240-pound defensive end in 2004. He added over 40 pounds since and has the frame to add even more. ... The son of former New Orleans Saints' offensive tackle Daren Gilbert, Jarron has incredible athleticism for his size and could be just scratching the surface of his potential.

Analysis

Positives: Rare athleticism for a player of his size. ... Versatile defender with experience at defensive tackle and defensive end. ... Good size potential. ... Naturally large man with room for plenty of additional muscle mass. ... Good initial quickness off the snap. ... Flashes the functional upper-body strength to disengage from blockers. ... Surprising balance for his height. ... Can break down in space and make the secure tackle. ... At least adequate closing speed for a player his size. ... Flashes some explosiveness as a hitter. ... Long arms and capable of batting down passes and potentially kicks. ... Often battled two or three blockers as a senior. ... Helped himself with a strong week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game. ... Ascending talent -- might be just scratching the surface of his potential.

Negatives: Bit of a "tweener." ... Struggles with leverage inside and might lack the burst off the snap and flexibility to flank the tackle and close effectively as a defensive end. ... Too often allows blockers to get into his chest. ... Inconsistent getting his hands up in the passing lanes. ... Questionable level of competition. ... A better raw athlete than football player. ... Some maturity concerns. ... Might be considered a one-year wonder after a breakout senior season.

Gilbert is a versatile lineman who has outstanding athleticism. He has a great frame and could add more mass. He can play inside or outside and flashes the ability to be a tremendous threat behind the line of scrimmage. He has long arms and delivers a quick punch to gain an advantage. He holds up well against double teams and disengages quick enough to track down a ball carrier. He’s viewed as a tweener. - Chris Steuber, Scout.com

JARRON GILBERT RISING ON DRAFT BOARDS

Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 21, 2009, 1:53 p.m. EDT

San Jose State defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert shined at his Pro Day with New York Jets coach Rex Ryan putting him through his paces during defensive line drills, according to Tony Pauline of SI.com.

Per the report, the 6-foot-5, 284-pounder registered a 4.76 in the 40-yard dash while running into a slight breeze. He also posted a 37-inch vertical leap and a 10-7 broad jump.

Gilbert had dropped four pounds from his NFL scouting combine weight.

With 26 NFL teams represented at the campus workout, Gilbert reportedly put on a show.

“By all accounts, it was a terrific performance and Gilbert is very much knocking on the door of round one,” Pauline writes.

Carolina Panthers coach John Fox was at the workout as well.

Gilbert’s father, Daren Gilbert, played offensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints from 1985 to 1988.

Sounds like a Justin Tuck type player. You can move him all over the line in any of the four positons and rotate him with each down. An ultimate X-factor to keep offensive linemen guessing.

Of course the question is, would John Fox use all of his assets in this way giving him that kind of mobility?

i think so...they moved pep quite a few places.

he had sacks from 4 different positions this past year.

very little reason to believe someone as versatile as gilbert wouldn't be used similarly.

Yeah, the day they talked about him jumping out of the pool on First Take people all over this board were all about him, including myself. If he is still on the board in the 3rd round, how do we not take him?

He's a late first to early second, so we would have to take him in the second to get him. He's not falling past the middle of the second. So if we don't trade peppers we would probably have to trade up for him. He does fit the bill though for a Meeks style defense, quick and strong, and a bit of a tweener for a DT though. Best thing about him is we could move him across the line depending on the down.

    • Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.
