Scouting the Saints Offense

Drew Brees is having another incredible year in just about every regard. His accuracy is amazing and his ability to spread the ball around and get it to his open receivers and backs is a huge reason for the teams success. Heres an in depth look at his favorite targets and how they are making him look good as well.

Top 5:

HB,Darren Sproles:26 Receptions for 224 yard and 1 TD

TE, Jimmy Graham:24 Receptions for 367 yards and 3 TD'S

WR, Robert Meachem:18 Receptions for 190 yards and 3 TD's

WR, Lance Moore: 15 Receptions for 144 yards and 1 TD

WR, Devery Henderson :12 Receptions for 265 yars and 2 TD's

Here is where it gets scary, out of sproles 224 yards, 219 were made after the catch. Graham also has 157 after the catch, with pierre Thomas 119 and Devery Henderson at 108 (all made it inside the top 20 in the league.)

Who moves the chains on third downs?(converts them into first downs)

These guys account for 18 of the 24 3rd downs Brees has turned into first downs

Darren sproles: 5

Jimmy Graham: 5

Rober Meachem:4

Devery Henderson:4

While sproles is a huge producer in the passing game he is not the primary runner in the Saints lineup despite being the best producer in the run game. That belongs to the Rookie Mark Ingram. As a matter of a fact they believe they had a 3 headed monster with Ingram,Sproles and Pierre Thomas. (they are also high on Chris Ivory who's on the p.u.p)

The Saints have haned the ball of 95 times to these 3 backs and here is a breakdown illustarting that:

Mark Ingram: 53 carries for 184 yards and 1 rushing TD

Pierre Thomas: 27 carries for 136 yards and no TD'S

Darren Sproles: 15 Carries for 134 yards and 1 TD.

Ingram Loves to attack the middle and run behind their LT Bushrod, which is good news for us. Charles Johsnon will be waiting on him, with our best linebacker James Anderson ready to greet him on the edge. It appears he mainly only attacks up the gut when they are running the clock out to seal a win so dont fret too much over this.

As far as Pierre and Sproles goes they are the kind of elusive backs who punish teams displaying bad fundamentals like missed tackles, being caught out of position, basically everything thats been wrong with our D so far.

Offensive line talk is boring so I'll keep it short they have 2 great guards, a center I have never heard of and Tackles that are good but will hopefully get abused By Johnson and Hardy.

Good analysis.

On paper this looks like a blowout to me. But the bylines make it look like a great game.

I'm not putting $$ on the game this week as I hate the line. And the over.

This is a gut-check game for the Cats and will either keep us in the season or ensure we are out of it. Second must win of the season for Rivera

Pretty simple. Don't let the flares and screens hit big, get pressure on 5-7 step drops, and secondary has to maintain the coverage. Make Brees throw perfect balls all game. Even in the NFL, QBs cannot do it EVERY throw. The key is pressure though. I'm not THAT worried about the run game, as long as we keep them between the tackles. They're not going to run too much. Just not who they are (even though, I think they SHOULD run more against us, since that is an obvious weakness).

Long as we score points consistently, this should be a win for us. Best I've felt going into a game all year, just because I know what we have and what our potential is.

    • Ok but is the alternative? He is not going to sign for a lesser contract, so then do you release him? We did that with Burns... see how that is working out. You can save the cap but you still need to replace the player. You can argue that we should have be preparing to replace Horn when his deal came up but we dealt those picks to get a QB.  Im curious to know how you would have handled it differently..
    • Perhaps you are correct but it has been a long time since the Panthers had a WR core that scared anyone and this could be part of the problem.  They finally found someone with Moore and the fans complained nonstop that he wasn't a true number 1 and perhaps the front office agreed and why he was traded.  If Warren is there at number 8, that's going to be the pick.
