Hurney has shown in the past to lock in extensions in December for players that may be of interest to other teams when free agency opens in March. I'm sure there are several reasons why

1) Rewarding good play

2) Preventing their agents from sniffing around other teams after the season is over gauging their interest.

3) By late Feb/early March teams are staring to show a few cards as to what positions they are looking in the draft. If a starter knows his position is one of interest to upgrade, he and his agent will be more inclined to find another team.
