2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

person

Coye Francis, CB, San Jose State

Coye transferred to San Jose State from the University of Oregon State following several off the field incidents; Chief among them was an arrest for a weapons-related incident.

Coye has a good frame and has shown quick feet. He comes up quickly to run support and make good tackles in at the line. Able to close quickly on passes from off coverage, he has an explosive burst to make plays. His good hands allow him to make tough interceptions, and he is not afraid of contact. Having shown good instincts, he also does not get fooled easy by play action moves.

Lacks athleticism and the speed to cover top NFL receivers. Also, his lack of experience is a concern. He has been inconsistent and backpedaled, struggling to stay up with receivers. Coye tends to give up too much cushion and cannot close in time. He Must improve his technique and his character is a big concern. He is also extremely raw.

Coye has the athleticism and playmaking ability that could enable him to play in the next level. He has the tools to become a solid reserve in a few years, but character and speed (ran a slow 4.59) could slide him to the bottom of the draft boards. As of today, Coye is a marginal six to seven rounder.

Jarron Gilbert being the one people may have heard of because of the pool thing.

Jarron also had a good Combine performance though. 4.8 forty, 28 in the press. 9'11 broad jump....Has a long wing span. I wouldn't mind picking him up in the second.

Jarron Gilbert reminds me of Tyson Jackson. I posted in the Meeks thread that I think Meeks/the Panthers may look to draft some guys like this. Drafting someone that could be a DE or DT in a 4-3 has it's advantages especially when the d-line has several needs like in Carolina.

The one big advantage of Gilbert would be that he may be available in the late 2nd to 3rd round while Jackson may go late 1st ro 2nd.

I actually like what NFL.com had to say about Gilbert:

Analysis

Positives: Rare athleticism for a player of his size. ... Versatile defender with experience at defensive tackle and defensive end. ... Good size potential. ... Naturally large man with room for plenty of additional muscle mass. ... Good initial quickness off the snap. ... Flashes the functional upper-body strength to disengage from blockers. ... Surprising balance for his height. ... Can break down in space and make the secure tackle. ... At least adequate closing speed for a player his size. ... Flashes some explosiveness as a hitter. ... Long arms and capable of batting down passes and potentially kicks. ... Often battled two or three blockers as a senior. ... Helped himself with a strong week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game. ... Ascending talent -- might be just scratching the surface of his potential.

Negatives: Bit of a "tweener." ... Struggles with leverage inside and might lack the burst off the snap and flexibility to flank the tackle and close effectively as a defensive end. ... Too often allows blockers to get into his chest. ... Inconsistent getting his hands up in the passing lanes. ... Questionable level of competition. ... A better raw athlete than football player. ... Some maturity concerns. ... Might be considered a one-year wonder after a breakout senior season.

Sorry if the post seems like a bunch of random thoughts...
