anyone remember LOST? where desmond is down in the underground unit hitting the button every 90 minutes under the impression that if he doesn't the island is going to blow up?

in a particularly striking scene, jack, who has ridiculed this idea from the start, skeptically asks him if he doesn't ever wonder if he's just pushing this button over and over and he's actually wasting his time because nothing is actually going to happen: "Don't you ever wonder if you're doing all this for nothing?"

Desmond replies "Every. Single. Day. Brother" in that scottish accent and gets this wild crazed look in his eyes.

that's the dynamic of faith and reason summed up into a five-minute segment of a tv show.

Yeah except that scenario I understand. It's the people that pick a religion thinking they've avoided having to make the decision to "push the button" when in actuality, there are so many religions, how do they know they're pushing the right one in the first place?

is the point of this post to prove that religious people are bat shiit crazy? because I dont know what the hell you just said.

desmond wasn't crazy, and it turned out NOT pushing the button DID lead to pretty disastrous results.

existential parallels aside, the point was that faith does not require a lack of doubt. the two our not mutually exclusive. faith = belief in spite of doubt.

So my alcoholic buddy had an episode and went and got cleaned up and found Jesus. Curiously he is drinking again but whatever.

After the Panthers game on Sunday he wants to start talking religion. Fine.

I said I think i believe in a higher power but nobody can be 100% sure what form that power is or if it even exists. The whole point is man cannot know God.

He replies that faith means you believe 100%.

I say: so you will not give even .00001% chance that there is no higher power?

Nope he says.
