Cam Newton vs Andrew Luck - Now who would you choose?

Why is he the rare type?

Evaluation at its core is about a skillset, let not make this about prediction i.e. who will be better, because to much about a prospect success depends on their situation (i.e. team, FO, coaching staff etc).

But we can talk about skillset.

What physically sets him apart to make the transition into the NFL?

physically? really not much. it's all about the mental aspect. he has pretty much a photographic memory and has all the intangibles you could want in a franchise QB. he's uber-intelligent and dead on accurate. he's solid at reading defenses and his field vision is incredible.

in several regards he'll have a leg up on newton coming into the league. he won't have to do near the amount of work that newton has had to do to get ready for the pro game. while he was with harbaugh, he was able to get most of that stuff down. footwork...playing from under center...etc. he really has no weaknesses in his play.

again, i do think that newton can be more successful and newton has already set the bar performance -wise higher than luck will be able to reach for a rookie, but still newton has had to put a lot of work in to get this far that luck won't. he'll have to learn he playbook, but luck is one of those guys that doesn't have to work hard to be good, even though he does.

i do agree, though, that a lot depends on the situation that luck falls into. i just feel he is someone that can walk into just about any offensive system regardless of the size of playbook and do well where as newton has had to have the offense tailored around him and his skillset. they are opening up the playbook more for him than other recent rookie QBs and he is learning at a much faster pace than people think any rookie would be able to grasp given the lockout esp. i just think luck will be able to learn it and grasp it quicker with less work. it doesn't mean that he will be better or see more success.

Luck will be just like Sam Bradford! They will marvel over his accuracy & smarts, as he checks down the whole game. Oh, and the media will try to convince us that the "check down" was the only play to be made, further adding to how smart he is.

that falls into the offense and coaching of the team he plays for.

if it's some cautious team coached by someone like john fox....i doubt even he would be allowed to start unless the FO forced it. for others, like with the falcons and ravens they will be asked to do very little in the passing game except hand the ball off or throw mostly short safe high percentage passes and essentially take on the role of game manager. if rivera and the panthers set a new trend that allows the QB to take on a lot more responsibility for the game and lets the QB take risks and allows them to make mistakes, then we could see luck doing really well, though probably not quite as good as newton.

i just don't see him making much mistakes and i see whatever team takes him being one that will recognize what he comes with and that it won't take a whole lot of development to get him ready to take charge of the offense.

I personally would like to see how Luck handles the pressure NFL defense will throw at him. This is where Cam excels!

i thnk the two of them are pretty much cut from the same cloth in this regard, though luck probably hasn't been challenged the way newton has been (or was heading into the pros).

i just don't see him as someone that would be all that shaken by or impressed with what defenses throw at him the same way newton hasn't been.

You could have stopped after: 'physically? really not much'.

I think there are a lot of things Luck does well from a physical standpoint, but I'm the one asking you.

Imo when someone doesn't know or have a reason for liking a prospect based on physical traits I have a hard time understanding what they base their opinion on.

No offense but to me the rest of your post is fluff that may or may not translate into the NFL.

Sure he could read defenses in college but how do we know that without the benefit of superior coaching and preparation he'll have that same advantage in the pros? Afterall Ricky Stanzi, Scott Tolzien and Greg McElroy showed similar intangibles traits and executed their 'pro-style' offenses at a high level.

Anyway, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

I'm kinda playing devil advocate.

I actually I think Luck is a good QB prospect.

He's a sneaky good athlete that has great pocket presence and has the poise to make a play after the design of the play ends.

In short he's a playmaker.

But, when someone tells me that Luck is better prospect then Locker and Newton I want to know why?

But no one seems to have an answer based on skillset comparison.

Prior to Luck bowing out, I was all for Luck (safer pick), but now my only thought is "f_©ҟ Luck"...I'm drinking Cammy Juice til the end baby!

I'm glad we don't have a QB who doesn't want to be here anyway; I saw his return to school as an affront to the whole Panther organization & fan base.

i said all along last year that luck was my first choice and newton was easily my second regardless of where we picked. i thought that luck would be ahead of newton, but over all not by much.

i'm glad luck stayed in because i think that newton will end up being more dynamic, though both players will be at the top of their game. i just hope luck goes to the AFC. i would love to see those two face each other in the superbowl.

newton was the right pick. no way would i go back and change that. no way do i wish we had been able to draft luck instead. we got the right one.

Lol that's never going happen...I really think this kid might be a bust....it's opposite day baby...mat lienheart character
