Thoughts on Hair Loss

Captroop

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd reach out to the Huddle for some opinions. Apparently, my hair is thinning (and apparently that maternal grandfather rule is BULLSH*T!). Anyway I went to my dermatologist to get his thoughts, and he said if I am worried about it he would write me a scrip for Propecia.

He also gave me the impression that the degree and rate of hair loss is all based on family history. My mom's side is all full heads of hair, my dad's side I don't know at all but he never really balded, just receded. BFD. Most guys have receded by their fifties so who cares. But in typical doctor fashion my dermatologist tempered everything with shades of doom and gloom, "We don't know, you could have the same hair when you are fifty or you could be totally bald by the time your 30." And of course it's the latter part of the sentence that worries me.

Half of me wants to fill it and at least hold on to what I have (which presently is luxurious and plentiful). But that goes against everything I believe as a firm proponent of biology. I think people should be accurate representations of their genetic code. Because if you're a patchwork of drugs and plastic surgery, your kids are still getting the fugged up genes so they can feel self conscious and forced to rely on bandaids too. The other half just thinks I should let whatever happens happen.

So what do you all think? Especially those of you who have been there. Fill out the scrip and spend the rest of my life on an expensive prescription to keep my hair as it is now, or go with the flow?

*Funny side note. Someone I know was trying to set me up with one of the cute assistants in the dermatologist office, and had the brilliant idea to send her in to take my medical history to see if the sparks flew. Yeah try to work your game while a girl is asking you about your hair loss.*

Throw a #2 guard on a set of clippers and take it down to next to nothing.

Bought some Wahl clippers two years ago and I haven't worried with my hair since. Cut mine down about every 3 weeks and its all good.

I use a #1. Your a rookie.

Well I'm not cutting it down yet. I'm still 24 and have full coverage. Only my barber has noticed me thinning.

In reality, all I really need is for it to stay like this for the next 4-5 years until I get married to an 8 or a 9. Then in my 30s I'll bust out the clippers.

But I'm not hearing an overwhelming "Take the Propecia! If I could go back in time I would have started it when I first found out I was losing my hair! Sure it's curtailed my libido, but hair is THAT important." Which is what it would have taken for me to consider using the drug.

After having several surgeries I was in the same pos as you. I went threw the same process and in the end said that's just way too much money. I buzzed my head and I am happy with it. People that have knew me since I was a kid notice the hair line but most don't even pay it attention.

Captroop, I'm 23 and have a perscription for Propecia and use Rogaine every now and again. My situation was similar to yours. My dad (who had hair loss problems starting in his late 20's) noticed my hair was thinning about two years ago. I went to a dermo and they told me the same thing basically--that I had developed the beginning stages of hair loss and that I may want to start taking medication to fight it. It's just like anything else really; as long as you catch it early, you can counter-act it.

My dad's sentiment at the time (and I'll pass the same along to you) is that this is something you will regret if you don't do something about it while you have the chance. If you have biological beliefs about genes and God made you this way and all that, that's fine. This is only if you choose to go for the medication. Propecia is expensive and most likely your health insurance doesn't cover it (since it's cosmetic, technically). I pay about $75 per bottle, which is 30 pills designed to last you a month. Truthfully, you can actually take three pills a week (M, W, F) and it will still have the same effect, meaning one bottle can last you closer to 2-3 months instead of just one, which is great considering the price.

got some receding hairline issues, corners have pulled back about an inch with some thinning behind them.

I just see it as forming the bottom half of the "J" that I'm going to shave my hair into the shape of eventually.

    • We are wearing black jerseys with blue pants. I'm getting a little exhausted with all the combos.  I kinda miss the black/silver and black/black for certain games tbh.
    • Its not something that could be backed up by data one way or the other.  Its just an opinion, like most things stated here.   Regarding my comment that started this discussion, Imo its more difficult to find good offensive linemen than wide receivers, due to a number of factors.  Granted that anyone that reaches the NFL has elite skills, but  I think that most players with the size, strength and skill would rather play on the defensive line.  If an offensive linemen does his job well, no one hears his name.  But if a Dlinemen gets to the qb a couple of times a game, all the fans know it.   Have a good offensive line directly impacts the run and passing attacks.  Where as have a good group of receivers only indirectly impacts the run game.  Miami's run game has taken a huge hit this year, while ours have improved.  I think Hunt is a big part of the reason this is true.  Not the only part of course, but a big part.
    • Where is the Roaring Riot tailgate these days. Probably the best bet
