Dan Connor vs Bears.

He's simply not that good. He's average. Average guys get beat from time to time.

No its not that simple.

You can coach and scheme things to hide player deficiencies.

He can be better, and this defense can be better.

If he just played average we wouldn't have given up 200 yards, that horrific.

Crazy. As I was reading this thread, NFL live just broke down our game. After The Cam love, they showed Forte's big runs. Conner was beaten three times in three highlights. One he was taken out by Hardy. He just kind of lingered beside Hardy as Hardy was engaged with a blocker. Hardy tripped and fell to the left, knocking over Conner, ugh. The second, he was cut blocked IN THE HOLE. Forte just ran through that gap, literally over Conner. The third he was just too damn slow getting to the edge. All of our LB's are underperforming and it's killing us.

It looked like our plan was to wait until the RB got tired (after 40 yards or so) and then tackle from behind. Some was their execution, and some our lack thereof. When we were running all over teams a couple of years ack, we always liked to think of our backs as unstoppable - other teams fans were furious at their lack of execution.

All depends on which side of the line you are viewing from, but we have to find a way to get it fixed.

Either way, we have to find a way for him to "get downhill" quicker either by cheating and taking a chance before he is sure of the play, or he needs to see the play and go straight to the gap to blow up the lead and hope the help it around. The Saint's will see this, and will not mind running the ball all game if we can't stop it.

I agree. I think you will see more run blitzing and shooting the gaps. Opens you up to other plays but it sure beats getting gashed consistently. If you can get them into a few third and longs by guessing right....

Johnson's philosophy is to run blitz on first and second down and force them into third and long where you really unleash the dogs. Now it doesn't mean that we will blitz on every down or always come with 6 or 7, sometimes we will only use 5, but we should be shooting the gaps on every down and pressuring the offense.

We surely are not doing that very well right now nor are we making hard for a Qb to step up in the pocket with no push up the middle.

As for Connor he is supposed to be blitzing on around 60% of plays. His problem from what I can see is that he takes poor angles and often hits the wrong gap which takes him out of the play.

Yeah during all the "our DT's suck" convo's yesterday, if you actually watched the game Connor was out of position, wasn't shedding blocks and was slow to react on all of the big run plays. Anderson was not disengaging very well and whomever was playing the other lb position did not have the range/speed to get there. Connor doesn't have great range however he is a very sure tackler. Godfrey was actually the best player on defense not named Charles Johnson.

I have always thought Dan Connor was way over rated. I have never seen him do anything to get the praise some people on here have given him.

goes back to his college days. people thought he was good enough to spend a mid 1st round pick on, probably due in part to coming from penn state

Anytime the guards can get to the LB's and make blocks it's a problem, I don't care who you have at LB.

This all starts with our deficiencies at DT, our DT's are easily washed out of plays or they are out of position to begin with and this frees up the guards to go to the next level and find someone to block.

Once you get to that point, it's a simple matter of physics... a 6'2" 235 lb linebacker has no chance against a 6'4" 330 lb offensive guard. LB's must be kept clean so they can pursue and make plays.

kind of funny b/c i saw someone on the boards say that connor was better than beason going downhill against the run, which i thought was a bizarre statement at the time and is quite lol in light of his inability shed blocks, navigate traffic. esp disconcerting given that the bears line is really not anything special. i figured our dt's would get blown up by the linebackers getting abused was very unexpected and it's going to be very difficult to win any close games when we cannot stop the run at all

i agree that it starts at the d-line to some extent; however, if we are blitzing lbs they are going to have to mix it up w/linemen from time to time. also connor is finding himself stuck to a guard for reasons beyond the d-line being bad imo-- instincts/reaction/athleticism

This is a good thread. I had some questions about Connor that this thread has answered. Brian Billick said Sunday that our linebackers were in tight to protect our young DTs. Does anyone think this is the case? I just know Connor spent lots of time on the ground.

Yup, our young DT's are a liability at this point so we have to pinch our LB's in to help pick up the slack, but at the end of the day our LB's have no chance to make plays against the running game when they are being blocked by OL's who can easily get clear of our DT's.

Effective blitzing requires a LB to have a relatively clean shot at a gap while the DT's tie up the OL. If an OL is free to block a LB on an inside blitz because the center does not need help, it's over...

If you have a DT that can get some penetration, or at least command a double-team from the center/guard... then you make the MLB a free hitter, that's how you stop the run 101.

Right now, we don't have a DT that requires anything close to a double-team... centers can handle any of our DT's 1 on 1 and kills our ability to blitz up the middle and allows opponents to run the ball down our throat.
