Anyone have experiences with Pitbulls?

My family from NY are afraid of dogs as well. It all depends on how you were brought up and the experiences you've had with dogs.

Yep. 'Rough' neighborhoods usually mean mean dogs and if all you see are mean dogs growing up, your more likley to be afraid of them.

But a lot of times this falls under #2 of my people to not own pits. The ones who get them, show them off for an hour to look tough and then chain them up for the rest of the day. Eventually this mixture of bordem/genes/abuse/no energy outlet/little interaction is a PERFECT recipe for disaster.

Sometimes abusing a dog and ignoring a dog's tendencies are jut as bad.

My wife's family had a pit bull when she was a child and I am told it was one of the best dogs they have ever had. However, her cousins had one that definitely showed its agression and eventually had to be put down.

The breed definitely has a tendenacy for agression. For that reason, they are one of the most unpredictable breeds that you can buy. For that reason, I would never own one. I just am not willing to take a chance with my kids or the other kids/animals in the neighborhood.

It's a long story why he has it, and it's getting old and feeble, so I'm not nearly as worried about it as I was when we first moved in. I'm friends with the owner, and as I said, you'd have no idea what these things can do if you're around them when he's calm. Really sweet dog when it comes to people.

I just don't trust the breed. It just seems like they don't know any different than killing other dogs.

A lady in my parents neighborhood was attacked by a pit bull was in the hospital for some time.

They should ban the dogs from Meck County.....or people should have to register to own them and have a required insurance policy to pay out damages if their dog causes any.

We looked at a house and saw next door that they were breeding pit bulls. The girl was ok and I told her there was no way in hell I would live next door to a place where my wife and kids could be in constant danger.

By the way, I don't disagree with any of the posts in here. But in my experience, pits have something in them that no other dog has when it comes to violence. It's scary.

A G Sheppard, you'll be able to train ina matter of hours.

A Lab/Golden will often retrieve dead animals and bring them to you.

A Rottie will eventually stick to you and the family like glue, to a fault, becoming very uneasy with stranger.

A Weimarner becomes very territorial.

A greyhound will chase and nip anything running fast and you can usually never own one with a cat. Almost all greyhounds are cat aggressive.

These are nothing more than tendencies and tendencies are nothing more than what they were BRED, by humans to do. Pits were bred to fight, that is whats 'in them' and it's humans who created it.

I agree with what you say too and I personally, would never own a pit...maybe a staffordshire. But blame humans, not the breed! (notice I am not saying blame the bad owners, but humans in general).

My boxer hates anything with wheels (not cars) she literally tries to attack bicycles and skateboards, I think she thinks they are hurting the people riding them.

This has to be a boxer trait, because every single boxer I've ever met, including my own, does the same thing. It took me 6 months to get them to stop attacking my mountain bike when we would go for rides.
