HUH?!? A rule change to make the Game BETTER?

IMO, a rule change that would ultimately make the game 100x better and not hurt anything and no Fan, Player or Owner would have the slightest problem with......

the ability to use a Coaches challenge on a penalty

if a referee throws a flag and it is a huge swing in the game (ie. the Shockey play)

i think the Coach should have the ability to go back and look if it would actually be called and if the flag needed to be picked up..

i seriously think this would ONLY benefit and not hurt the game..

Opinions??

i agree. i dont think they would have overturned that call though. the dude was falling over regardless if shockey touched him or not but the refs woulda spewed that "indisputable evidence" stuff. its kinda stupid that you can challenge a refs call, then a ref goes and decides if he was right or not.

you can already challenge <= 11 men on the field and GAIN a penalty call in your favor. why not open it up for any call?

its a nice idea..but it wouldn't happen because you would then have coaches asking for reviews of holding penalties, etc. Holding happens on almost every play and every group of refs allow more things than others...it might be too difficult to do.

That was a $hitty call on shockey...i just don't think there is anything that can really be done unless the other refs were to negate his call immediatly after the play.

If the penalty results in a TD called back or for the D it results in a 1st down with less then 2 mins left then it should be reviewable. Or to make it simplier any penalty in the last 2 mins can be reviewed as well as TD reversing penalties. Don't hold your breathe however these penalties are a way refs can control the outcome of a game.

You can't review penalties. Unlike yardage and replaying catches, refs don't throw the flag unless they actually see a foul. No ref is going to over rule a judgement call another ref on their team made. Even the play against Shockey would be upheld because the ref threw the flag and Shockey did actually make contact. Even if it shouldn't have been a flag, it would not get changed in any type of replay system.
