The myth of the new coach success.

i'm not the one starting a bunch of pooty threads and taking bits and pieces of information/"stats" and cherry picking only the things that support my pooty pessimistic position.

oh...and don't give me that "being realistic" crap. it won't fly. you are putting whatever negative spin you can on things just like you have always done since you've been here.

Actually you have misunderstood the thread as have others.

The statement was made that historically first year coaches need 1 year to see any results and we should expect anything until next year.

What this thread does is show that many coaches do it right away (lots in the past 5 years actually), many others never see results and only a few actually follow this mythical one year deal.

There is no reason to think that Rivera needs a year to do anything. It's not a valid excuse for losing.

And based on Rivera's comments he sure as hell isn't taking a pass on his first year. Not sure why we as fans would give him a pass.

Winning or losing during the first year of a head coaches career does not determine how great or not the coach will become. It is even less practical to judge how his career will unfold based on just his first 4 games.

1st year as head coaches past:

Bill Parcells 3-12-1

Bill Walsh 2-14

Chuck Noll 1-13

Bill Belichick 6-10

Joe Gibbs 8-8

Tom Landry 0-11-1

Vince Lombardi 7-5

Jimmy Johnson 1-15

Haven't seen anyone suggest that it does.

Many of you have been suggesting that we should not be expected to win because we have new coaches - and new coaches need time to win.

I looked up every coach in the league with 5 years of tenure or less to see how well they did in their first year.

Nearly half of these coaches are making the playoffs in the first year. And several of these were complete turnarounds.

New coaches in 2011 are 9-7 so far.

Another myth BUSTED!

Mike Smith 2008 Atlanta Falcons - 11-5 *

Ken Whisenhunt 2007 Cardinals - 8-8

John Harbaugh - 2008 Ravens - 11-5 *

Jason Garrett - 2010 Cowboys - 5-3

Jim Schwartz 2009 Lions 2-14

Jim Caldwell 2009 Colts 14-2*

Todd Haley 2009 Chiefs 4-12

Tony Sparano 2008 Dolphins 11-5 *

Leslie Frazier Minn 2010 3-3

Rex Ryan 2009 Jets 9-7 *

Mike Tomlin 2007 Pitt 10-6*

Steve Spagnuolo 2009 Rams 1-15

Raheem Morris 2009 Bucs 3-13

Mike Munchak 2011 Titans 3-1

Jim Harbaugh 2011 49ers 3-1

Hugh Jackson 2011 Raiders 2-2

Ron Rivera 2011 Panthers 1-3

It is definitely not that simple. If you think it's a myth that a new coach has a harder time than other coaches then you're trying to hard too temper the optimism. Some people are so frustrated from fox, they are afraid that if we give Rivera any praise when trying to put together a winning team then he'll turn into Fox. It's obvious we're not going to be a bad team but it will take some time to be competitive.
