1 hand off in the red zone and other observations.

The critique here is not Cam related but play calling related.

eh, I don't really have a big problem with it.....but I understand you point. But I think Carolina clearly has Cam on the fast track and he is excelling. Red zone play is always the toughest for a QB to master......and so Carolina is going to let Newton literally get ALL the work. Betweent he 20's and in the redzone.

We are building something. This year they want Cam to get the work. It will make him learn faster and be better quicker.

The redzone plays when they don't work aren't wasted....they are building blocks. Carolina is all in with Cam. Those reps will make Cam better.......and IMO he will have us ready to make a real run much sooner b/c of it.

my 2 cents.

Predictable loses meaning in the red zone. The threat of newton running is a good thing and I like that they aren't afraid to use him. I fail to see how it is not effective. Further back near the 20 I could see your point but closer to the goalie cam needs to be utilized. He's the catalyst that is keeping this team from being the worst team in the league.

without getting to macro on you or freakonomics, Cam running and or scoring a td isn't the issue per se. He hasn't ran that much and has scored. Him getting knocked around is a longer term issue that will show up one day if they don't square this up now.

Like I'm saying. Because of the LACK of hand offs, you are making it easier on the D to stop you. Last I checked that's NOT the goal.

From the Panthers 20 to the other teams 30, Cam and the Panthers are highly effective. But they don't give points for moving the ball or # of times thrown.

Only when you cross the plane of the goal line do you get 6. Who and how it doesn't matter.

When your rbs are averaging at worst 6 yards a pop you don't take the ball out of their hands inside the 10 and run a completely predictable read option or qb draw. If we know it's coming (and plenty of the people in the gametime chat did) then the defense damn sure does. They are going to take the opportunity to tee off on him before long, especially when we play the Saints next week....

Our run style has changed from a ground pound attack to a finesse type attack with the draw and option being used heavily... I'm not a huge fan of it myself. I don't mind them using Cam as a runner some, but I am concerned about him getting hurt too...

I would like to see them line up with a lead blocker and run it inside the 10 instead of trying the option/draw/QB draw play.

thats all im basically asking for. not all the time, but let it show up to keep the d on their toes.

This is what I was saying just before the game ended and got called names for

I was saying it to, both running backs would have had huge days and probably a big impact on the game had we not abandoned the run....

hand offs. 3 total running plays in the red zone.

Take away that last td at the end. Total garbage points.

If we are taking the late TD away we should add the two missed FGs and we still woulda had 29 points and @470 yards of total offense.

Those numbers should still win you most games.

But we all want better efficiency in the red zone and I think that will come as Cam and our coaches grow together

I honestly don't understand the red zone play calling. The only possible explanation I can think of is this:

The coaching staff realizes that this is a throw-away year, especially with the injuries we have already taken. Due to the new practice rules which limit reps, it may be harder to develop players. Red zone passing may be the most difficult thing for a QB to do with a high rate of success. The shortened field means the defense doesn't have as much ground to cover and the QB has to make his reads much faster or be very precise with his throw. In a lot of ways, throwing in the red zone is a lot like pitching and it will take time for Cam to adapt. What he needs is reps and it is possibly the best way to increase his accuracy.

I still want to see more handoffs though. If Cam ever gets hurt on a QB scramble Chud might get lynched. :mad5:

I think they're trying to get Cam some reps in the red zone too. Or trying to get it done in the passing game to put the defense out of the box and on its heels.
