Rule 12, Section 2, Article 8 (Unnecessary roughness)

(f) If a player uses any part of his helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/”hairline” parts) or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily. Although such violent or unnecessary use of the helmet and facemask is impermissible against any opponent, game officials will give special attention in administering this rule to protecting those players who are in virtually defenseless postures …

Note: The provisions of section (f) do not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or noncrown parts of the helmet in the course of a conventional tackle on an opponent.

(g) if the initial force of the contact by a defender’s helmet (including facemask), forearm, or shoulder is to the head or neck area of a defenseless player.

Note: Defenseless players in (f) and (g) shall include (i) a player in the act of or just after throwing a pass; (ii) a receiver catching or attempting to catch a pass; ……

Smitty had ALREADY made the catch.

god how dumb do you have to be to not know that using your helmet to spear somebody is a penalty

Seriously. That dude launched himself helmet first right in to the side of Smitty's head. It doesn't get anymore blatant than that.

God forbid a DB should fall down trying to cover Shockey though. Of course that's offensive PI because Shockey almost touched him while he was tripping over his own feet.

the refs were fuging awful today

shockey will probably get fined, but i'm pretty sure at this point players are aware and he is criticizing them despite knowing the repercussions. sometimes they need to be called out and today was one of those days.

If he gets fined, I hope his teammates help him pay it. The refs absolutely deserved to get called out over that one.

Leading with the helmet, aka spearing, is never legal. Ducking the helmet to hit with the top of the helmet, especially to the helmet of the person being tackled, is spearing and illegal.

He didn't hit Smitty's helmet with the facemask or noncrown part of the helmet and it wasn't a conventional hit. It was spearing.
