How long do you give Deangelo Williams?

Just a little FYI

First game hitting +100 rushing yds. in a game

2007: wk 6

2008: wk 5

2009: wk 6

I see a trend there....everyone knows he starts late....how about we wait until after the season is half over to start demanding the money back.

A trend which adds to the reasons why re-signing him was not a good idea.

Overpaying an aging and slow starting RB.

I may be wrong, but it looks like most of Stewarts production has come from passes out in the flat, not outright running. After 3 games, Cam leads the team with 98 yards rushing, so Stewart isn't exactly lighting the world on fire on the ground either. Give it time, and the run game will come. This team has always started out slow running. Fox just ran it so early and often that they got more run-play reps than they have been getting in this new system.

That being said, Stewart has really shown how much of a threat he can be underneath in the passing game, like Westbrook was in his prime in Philly, so they definitely need to have a lot of packages designed to get him the ball with space when the receivers stretch the DB's and safeties deep.

Williams also has some pretty decent hands. No reason we couldnt move him to a slot or maybe a wingback position and start running a double tight end wingback type formation and light up the middle of the field or put some pressure on the flats. D will is still a solid athlete, maybe we just need to be creative in the ways we use him.

Why don't we wait until we aren't 3 games into the season to start demanding we have made this HUGE mistake and oh gawd we spentz too much moneyz on DeAngelo he will never perform again hes old (he's 28 btw) hes washed up.

You know who else people said that about?

Steve Smith.

running the ball isn't the only concern that i have with williams.

under john fox, the running backs weren't asked to do much outside of rushing...very little pass catching and none of them were very good in pass protection.

he's not doing well in either one under the current system, and i find it hard to believe the coaching staff didn't see this in the offseason since they didn't hesitate to give the resposibilites to stewart as early as the second quarter of game one.

pass protection, catching the ball, and rushing together are usually the responsibilities of the lead back in most offenses.

i'll have to find the numbers, but stewart has seen almost double the snaps williams has because of this.

stewart's role won't decrease when the run game does catch on, and he won't see less than half the rushing attempts.

he's playing the part of the unofficial starting running back.

You are asking the wrong question. Instead you should be asking when we are going to alter the playcalling to feature what Williams does best. This is to take nothing away from Jonathan Stewart because he has done a very good job, but the play selection really is more focused on runnning between the tackles which is what Stewart does better than Williams.

Plus the downfield blocking has not been that good. Stewart is better at gaining yards after first contact which has accounted for many of the yards he has gotten. Williams is also good in space and is elusive but frankly goes down much easier. One of the things that we did very well in 2009 was block downfield. I see us doing some of that this year but frankly the backs and Williams in particular are not making to the second level.

I think we need feature Williams more on dump passes, smoke routes, and screens to get him on the edges and in space more. When we do that his production will improve. If we keep doing what we are doing now, I don't expect much to change.

It hasn't been just 3 games. 1 TD. 1 100 yard game since Nov of 2009.

28 is old for a NFL RB.......Williams is older than Smitty positionally.
