Jon Gruden: Cam Newton Induced "Shock and Awe"

You're right...It's clear he knew Mallett was coach's kid and was quite knowledgeable with the Xs and Os. He knew not to ask any real questions to Blaine cause he would get frazzled and lost quite easily...like who couldn't see that. And he knew to throw an NFL QB verbarge to Cam to continue the already preceived view by those in the media that Cam wasn't NFL ready and not qualified to go off the draft board as high as he was. Yeah it was done to feed the egos and nothing more.

Feed whose ego?? Gruden? Cam?? Not sure I get that last sentence.

It was seen by some as evidence that Auburn’s offense was so simplistic that Newton would never be able to fully comprehend the pro game with all its verbiage and variables. Read more: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/09/28/2648152/gruden-on-newton-now-shock-and.html#ixzz1ZLyyPrYa

That's a load of BS...It was used to pad the already spunned media lie that Cam wasn't "intelligent" enough to make it in the NFL as a top level QB and should not be going off the draftboard so high. That Gruden show was shown close to the darft..The media was already questioning Cam's intelligence way before with subtle hints of his "intagibles" or lack there of by hinting and constantly comparing him to VY and Jamarcus.

Funny how no one questioned any of the other top QB's ability to abapt to the NFL verbarage. Especially the other QB, Blaine, who was always link to Cam as if they were identical in every way. I guess, except for intelligence...

Nope, the same way folks like ESPN went out of their way to paint Cam as stupid and not ready for the NFL by playing up his weaknesses. It was the same way they went out of their way to paint Blaine as so intelligent by showing very little of his weaknesses.

I agree with a lot of your media criticism but I don't think that was Gruden's intention on that show.

Gruden came out right after their workout and said he was sold on Cam Newton as the #1 pick. So if that was his intention he was sending mixed messages.

It really wasn't gruden's intention, but it was ESPN's intention to put him on the spot. I'm pretty sure gruden knew exactly what cam meant when he said they played fast. It was just something thrown in there for the rest of the media and dumb fans to say "see he's not smart enough". That's why gruden came away still saying he should be the top pick. Oh well. Now we all know he can run a NFL offense and run it pretty good i might add.

Weaknesses:

Product of spread offense

Must learn to go through progressions

Limited experience under center

Needs to work on pocket presence

Only two years as starter

Those things paint Gabbert as intelligent?
