Peppers conference call recap

Yeah, they set up plenty of opportunities for him to take a jab at the Panthers and he passed.

Meanwhile he talked about how much he liked it here and how proud he was of CJ.

Truth is, Peppers would have stayed if we made him a competitive offer - but we didn't - so he went somewhere that he was wanted and he's happy where he's wanted.

$14mil a year isn't competitive? He went to Chicago for $15mil a year, and if I remember correctly Chicago had some kind of clause that could get them out of a good chunk of money if they decided he wasn't worth it.

Not to mention the multiple times in previous years they offered to make him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL.

The funny thing about that is that at one point when Hurney was pressed about the question of whether or not they ever called Peppers, he said something to the effect of "We've had an offer on the table since 2007".

The Panthers new damn well that as a matter of pride, Peppers wasn't going to pick up an offer they made in 2007 and the Bears were offering more.

At first I hated Pep, but honestly it worked out great for both sides with CJ's emergence. We had some good memories Pep, but its time to move on.

Guy is a freak though, if he had Smitty's heart, Holy poo. That would be the scariest human being alive.

Would have been ever better to have Peppers + CJ, just saying.

Even if he did say that, you're assuming that means they didn't make any other offers. Sure, Yas and Gantt and the other guys that follow the Panthers aren't official sources for us to take as stone fact, but it had been pretty widely reported for a while that the Panthers made offers after the '07 one. It's pretty widely accepted they made an offer to him in the offseason that he left.

I don't hate the guy for leaving the team. It happens, I didn't hate Moose and I welcomed his return, but I don't appreciate the way Peppers handled it. I can understand if he was fed up with the way Fox was running things, but by all appearances Peppers flat out refused to talk to the Panthers for 3 years. And to top it off he was telling the media things like "their offer to make me the highest paid defensive player in the NFL after a season where I only got 2.5 sacks felt disingenuous" and "I gave them an opportunity to make me an offer and they didn't" when everyone else was saying they did. It was those kinds of statements that made me think one of two things was going on:

A) Peppers was flat out lying and misleading the public so he didn't look like the douchebag

B) His "agent" was flat out lying to him and not properly communicating what was going on with the team

I could honestly believe either one.

We'll probably never know what really happened, but Hurney's not the type to lie... so when he said that it told me that basically they were letting Peppers walk. If they really wanted to keep him, they could have just slapped the franchise tag on him while they continued to try to work something out.

I'm with you on not appreciating the way he left, if he wanted to be traded he should have gone to JR behind closed doors instead of broadcasting it through ESPN, etc...

Yea, but Hurney is the type to misdirect. I could see a situation where they made the offers that were reported, but he didn't want it to look like the Panthers were bending over backwards for a player. Would set a bad precedent. So he might have made a comment that made it look like the Panthers weren't Urkel and Peppers was Laura.

We were nothing but nice to the guy. Coaches, ownership, and the entire city. We adored him from day one and always gave him a ton of support and money. When the rest of the league and analysts were down on him during his 1 sack season most people stood by Peppers and knew there was more to him than just stats. And I don't see how Richardson telling him to be a leader is something that pissed him off. It's truly a shame and it's all his fault that he alienated himself. We should've traded him or something after 2008, but there was no reason for him to act the way that he did. Be a professional.

 i remember reading A LOT of insulting messages against Julius on the charlotte observer forum.

I don't know if the players are reading the forums but their families certainly.

So i can understand Julius frustration if all the sh** wrote on the CO forums have been reported to him.

I don't remember insulting articles about Peppers. What I do remember is how he was the most popular sports figure in the Carolinas for 7 years. I remember him saying (or insinuating) part of his problem was how much adoration he was getting and how he wanted to be able to go somewhere and not get hounded for autographs when he went to dinner. Sounds like a pretty smitten fanbase to me.

    • His o loaded with swift, dj, Keenan and Rome was inconsistent at best. The d was bad. And the game management was atrocious and lost them games.  He was terrible and made the team worse. I wish they kept him
    • That is my point.  I think teams make a huge mistake when they pay their decent to average QBs top QB money because they feel that they have to match the market or lose their investment--There is no way, for example, that Tua or Prescott or Murray should all be making more than Mahomes--I mean, Dak makes $15m per season more than Mahomes. People say, "Well, when its his turn...." But that is not how it should be--so my point was that Bryce can be doing mediocre to good enough in 2 years, but the way it is going, you have to pay him at the starting QB rate--currently $60m.  So even if you think he will continue to improve, at $60 m, he would eliminate any chance for a ring---so my view is, if he is not elite, you cut him.  So you draft QBs now and see what you can make of them.
    • With two 4ths and three 5ths I’m hoping we can kill it on adding depth. Take a gamble with the two 7ths.  First 3 picks id love to address the defense. I expect Tuttle, Robinson, and Jewell to all be on the 2025 roster but not after that. Be a good time to add depth and let them develop a year.
