Some background on the Jim Johnson 4-3

I'd take posters like the OP over you everyday of the week

Yeah on the Huddle it's always a crap shoot to see how a thread is received, even if you're just trying to get a conversation going the focus is often not where it should be. Probably prevents many from even making threads due to the mob mentality.

Best for the OP just to not give a fug what posters say, rather just shrug it off or agree to disagree. It's when people go PFFL psycho big problems arise. :out:

Exactly.

THe problem seems to arise when someone states an opinion or cites a reference as fact and when someone else disagrees, the back and forth bickering ensues to try to prove they are correct. The problem is that they derail into different bunny trails and red herring discussions, both sides intent on winning the argument at all cost, to the detriment of the message board community who want to join the discussion but not join the fight.

At least the OP was engaging in a discussion that could be interesting and encouraged others' input.

back on topic....i remember reading this a while back and thought it was a great introductory to the jim johnson defense.

one thing i saw that was spot on and that i love about it is this...

given a couple relatively injury free years in the system with a solid commitment to it, this defense could be just as solid and respectable/feared.

When I found out that Rivera picked McDermott for DC I was very happy. I have always admired Johnson's defense as a longtime Eagle fan growing up. I remember Jerome Brown and Reggie White in their prime. I am hoping he will be able to install a Jim Johnson defense here. So far the results have not been great largely because the blitz has not been very good up to now. But it is very early and there is plenty of time to improve. It is just that a Johnson defense is a high risk high reward defense. Right now we have the risk side but not the reward side yet.

But as you say in a few years, it could be well worth the wait.

Yeah, I like how the defense sounds, very much like Pitts 3-4 in that it attempts to create mismatches, and it being a blitz heavy scheme, it should be exciting and cause a lot of pressure to be put on the offense/QB.

I'm not a huge fan of the bend but don't break defenses, to me, you can get the same end result by using an well executed aggressive defense, but with higher upside.

With all the great QBs these days, you need to get pressure, and pressure fast, or they will pick you apart.

As long as the blitzes are executed correctly, it should be some exciting football for us to come.

Sean had trouble in Philly with his linebacking corp, they lacked the speed and athleticism needed for a Johnson defense. Plus your corners have to be good in man coverage and your linebackers and safeties have to be ball hawks in addition to good blitzers. Even your DEs need to be able to drop back and provide pass protection skills in the short zones and against tight ends. Most of all you have to be able to disguise the blitz until the last second then burst through the line and be a sure tackler. It takes timing and great instincts in addition to great athleticism. You need a great Mike who can blitz and stop the run up the middle as well as a Will who is great against the run and good out in space. Most of all when you don't get there you have to be a solid tackler and limit the big plays. Something we have failed to do in every contest.

He had the same basic core of LBers that Johnson drafted for that defense. He got some of the better linebackers back that Johnson had lost.

What defensive turnover did they have?

Johnson's last year was 2008. He started Stewart Bradley at Mike, Chris Gocong at Sam and Omar Gaither at Will. The defense was solid (ranked 3rd) but the linebackers were unspectacular. They accounted for only 5.5 sacks and 1 Int. Not exactly stellar. Bradley was the best among them. Unfortunately, that was his best year. Gocong was pretty good and Gaithers was inconsistent. Akeem Jordan was Gaither's backup but replaced him in week 12 at Will and started there for 5 games.

In 2009, McDermott lost Stewart Bradley (MLB) to a season ending injury right out of the chute. Gocong had a very mediocre year with injuries, rotating positions to take over for Stewart and was moved back and forth. Gaither started at Will but went on IR week 11 and his backup Jordan took over. So by the end of 2009 both Stewart and Gaither were on IR, Gocong was having a subpar year and Jeremy Trotter started 3 games at Mike. Witherspoon got plenty of work.

Then in 2010, they trade Gocong to Cleveland, don't resign Witherspoon or Trotter. Stewart only plays 12 games and gets 60 tackles, Jordan only starts 3 games, Gaither started 2 games and they move folks in and out with Sims, Fokou and Chaney garnering a number of starts.

So answer your own question. What defensive turnover did they have?? Our resident Eagles expert, Johnny, could give you a much better chronology but suffice it to say that McDermott had difficulty keeping people healthy and productive.

You know he must feel that he is snakebitten when it comes to linebackers. He comes to Carolina and loses 2 of his three starting linebacker by week 3 of the season.

Come to think about it, perhaps I know who is at fault for Beason's and Davis' injuries. It was bad juju that McDermott brought with him from Philly.
