titans sign mark jones

Nobody is underrating Jones. People are underrating the importance of the blocking though. I don't care how hard you run, if there is no blocking, you're not going anywhere.

I'm not saying that Jones didn't do a good job, he did a great job for a guy who had just been cut, and the Panthers are damned lucky they were able to sign him at the last minute, but it is not gonna kill them to lose Jones...not by a long shot.

On the other hand, most of our fan base has already written Robinson off because he didn't set the world on fire as a rookie. The fact is...he was every bit as good as Jones towards the end of his rookie season, and by all accounts, he was having a great TC as a returner and as a WR before he got hurt. Have a little faith people.

Yes, that's another thing I'm excited to see. I think and hope that Robinson will be able to surprise some people by making some plays at WR.

Robinson is a dancer and Jones was a straight line runner. The difference between the two is a matter of personal preference if they perform at the same level. 25 yards per return for Robinson will be different than 25 from Jones.

A guy like Robinson can go 100 yards on a single return and then return the next three for 10 yards each for 140 yards on 4 returns. That is 35 yards per return but the average start position for the offense is the 25 yard line. Sure he gave you 7 points but he kept the offense deep in their own end and lost you some field position battles, more than likely.

Jones can return 4 kicks for 120 yards and put your offense starting at the 35-40 yard line for 4 drives. So that gives your offense 4 cracks at a short field.

I think that is the foundation of the debate. Would you rather have a guy that dances behind his blocking and then breaks a big one every now and again or would you rather have a guy who catches the ball, takes what the blocking gives him and sets up the offense to make drives.

I dont care if Jones couldn't play receiver well. We didn't need him to. We had the best return game since they decided Smitty shouldn't return kicks anymore. And what do they do? They decide to let Jones walk and we go into another season YET AGAIN with a big question mark at that position. Why do that when you had a guy that is certain to be good in the first place? Robinson could still be on the roster anyway so it wasn't a question of Robinson vs Jones. Instead we keep Moore, who wasn't activated at all last year, over Jones. I thought we actually wanted to improve our special teams and that they didn't care if a guy only played 1 position well. Isn't that why we kept Hankton all those years?

Maybe they just have confidence in Robinson? To the coaches, the position might not seem like a question mark because they think that Robinson can do the job.

It should be remembered that the Panthers did make Jones an offer, and while it was lowball it was likely fair given his overall profile.

Jones was a consistent player, not a spectacular one. In other words, he was the kind of guy Fox likes to have. And honestly, his value as such should not be underestimated.

That said, we do at least have candidates to replace him.

so if Robinson sucks it'll just be because his blocking wasn't as good as Jones'?

I didn't mean to imply that Robinson had bad blocking. His problems have been well documented. He was jogging around and trying to set up every block, instead of just running and trusting his blocking, which is exactly what he started doing in the second half of his rookie season...hence, the longer returns.

My whole point is that Robinson was just a rookie who learned from his early mistakes, so it's ignorant to just write him off and claim that he sucks. To each his own though.
