...that it was Byron Bell playing right tackle on that game clinching drive rather than Jeff Otah?

Otah came back in for the 2 point conversion. As an aside, the team went with what looked like an "ultra heavy" package with two tight ends (Shockey, Olsen) two fullbacks (Felton, Brockel) and Stewart at runningback. No wide receivers.

Could have been just a regular substitution, or Otah could have just needed a break. Still, that was a big drive. And given Otah's history, it raised an eyebrow for me.

could be the coaches wanted to be careful with overusing him. sopping field = higher probability of injuries and right now that's the last thing we need.

Maybe, but I don't think you cautiously rest a guy when you're trying to drive the field down 3 with under 5 minutes to go. That's a situation where you want your best players on the field if they can go.

Either Otah couldn't go or the staff felt Bell gave us a better chance to win.

I think Steve B made a comment during the game Carolina went in w/ the gameplan to give him some rest.

Have to keep in mind he missed all his preseason reps and went into AZ and played that full game....that was probably rushing things to start the season. Now they are showing a little more patience.....plus it gives Bell valuable reps.

Matt Kalil isn't coming here. He can't play the interior, and he likely won't fall to us anyways.

Tackle is set. Byron Bell is the future at that position if it isn't Otah. Jordan Gross has the left locked down for at least another 5 seasons.

Bell may have very well come in on that drive because we were passing a lot. Bell was much better in pass protection last week against a better GB defense than Otah was in pass protection against a jax defense missing their two starting DE's. Some of Cam's overthrows yesterday came because he was feeling pressure from that side and rushing the ball out without staying mechanically sound. I know people always want the glamorous names to fill positions-in this case being Matt Kalil-but Byron Bell has been very good, and I wouldn't be shocked if he supplanted Otah as the starter on the right side by year's end when we are in the Super Bowl. Otah is a monstorous run blocker, but we aren't a running O anymore.

You need to stop making sense. You're gonna stand out. :)

Byron is a steal, and has been more consistent than Otah. Wouldn't be surprised if we shipped Otah off next year or draft day.

Off topic....I noticed Greg Olsen wasn't wearing receiver gloves at all. Those things are so incredibly tacky, I just can't understand why a guy would opt to not have them on.

Sorry, back on topic now. I think BB is becoming pretty solid in pass protection, and that's why he was in there.

Yeah, it was weird seeing someone catch a ball with their bare hands.

Looked really oldschool.

I think those gloves lose their tack when soaked.

They have no grip in the rain,

I personally never used gloves, I like to have the whole feeling of the ball and even the small seams on the gloves annoy me, don't get me wrong, they work great, but some people rely on their senses more then others.

    • Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.
