Think they played a lot of Cover 3 in the 2nd half yesterday...so it could have given you the impression he was playing safety with the 3-deep look.

This. They did a lot of that in the preseason too, esp. in the "buffalo nickel" package w/ Godfrey/Pugh up near the line of scrimmage.

Actually Gamble shadowed Thomas a couple of times, and on one of those plays, Thomas lined up in the slot, and Gamble played about 7 yards off him, which gave the look as if he was liked up at safety, but he wasn't.
