What do you attribute to Cams shaky start today...

I like what I've seen from Newton so far, but one thing Im happy/sad about is scrambling. I like that he does keep his eyes down the field, but a few times in all 3 games I thought there was more yards to be had by running it. Hes outplayed my expectations so much, that I started getting mad when he was high on some balls. Knew that would happen after two good weeks with a few bad throws.. Im glad we got the win, and I am even more glad that he is not satisfied.

PS I think he has taken both losses fairly hard because we were in position to possibly be 3-0, so he might have started the game trying to do too much...

I knew he would have "off throws" or an "off game" here and there, and I think today was the perfect storm, literally.

The start initially was really frustrating to watch, but not unexpected at some point this season. It was really tough because it hadn't started raining yet and he was missing open targets high, at least 4 times. A couple of them were throws he was making the first 2 weeks that are on a Tom Brady-accurate level (fitting it in the window between the CB and the safety over the top on the sideline). Those throws require pinpoint accuracy, and they just weren't happening today as they did in the first 2 weeks. Again, he is a rookie and those days will happen from time to time.

Then the other misses were of the "wide-open-all-you-have-to-do-is-get-it-to-them" variety. Such as the miss to Legadu over the middle... That would've been a guaranteed 30+ yard gain and possible TD and he completely missed him high and didn't lead him at all.

That was all in the first quarter... So I was hoping he would settle down and get in a rhythm in the 2nd. Then, the monsoon happened. So he never really got a chance to get in a rhythm until the rain stopped in the 4th quarter.

So, it wasn't horrible, it was just one of those days. We will definitely see less and less of these as his career progresses. And what matters is he played his best when it counted. The rain coming in definitely limited us and him for about 2 and a half quarters worth of the game, so his numbers likely would've been much better had we gotten those in better playing conditions.

Regardless, he'll be better next week. I've heard many of the great QBs when analyzing other QBs talk about on off nights how it feels or appears as if their accuracy suffers because they're trying too hard to "guide" a ball into a spot, rather than just throw it and put it there. It feels to me like Cam was doing that today.

He was thinking too much and it gets to you mechanically. And I think this was a result of the media love-fest for the most part over the last week and then knowing the implications of this game against a guy who could've also been the #1 pick. He wanted to show out instead of just playing like he did the first 2 weeks.

I expect more awesomeness next week. A lot less attention and pressure and a better opponent (as I suspect that Cam being a guy that shows up when the lights go on may also be a guy that plays up or down to his competition as a rookie).

Also, don't know how many of you saw the historic rookie vs. rookie #1 QB showdowns of recent years that ESPN was showing leading up to our game this week, but from what I saw in those games, most of them had average games against one another, much like we saw today... Even the great ones. I really think it's a mental thing.

It's funny how the self-righteous posters get off on telling others that Cam's ankle wasn't a problem when they have no f**king clue themselves. This is an opinion thread and people are giving their opinions. It's ridiculous to try to argue with somone in here.

I don't believe his foot was a problem based on watching him play.

He did not appear to be limping. He did not appear to have any trouble running with the ball. He did not appear to have any trouble planting on the foot.

Based on WHAT I SAW, he was just throwing the ball high all day. It happens. He is a rookie and will have games where this happens.

this partially a joke and partially serious.....

But Newton has always proven and Rivera has been constantly told Cam is a big game QB.

NFL rookie debut? Impressive.

SB Champs? Impressive.

The crappy Jags in Charlotte in probably the 2nd least interesting matchup of the week in a game Carolina should win.....not impressive, but good enough to get the job done.

I think this could be a trend we see with Cam. Not something for certain each week....but the bigger the game, the better the play could be reality.

He def has a problem sailing balls. I think the riggers of the NFL might be getting to him now.

Anyone who has played athletics at any level knows that sometimes you are feeling it and things just seem to all fall together and other times no matter what you do it seems you just can't get it together and make obvious mistakes.

We all know he started out struggling but came back to win the game late. It happens to most folks. No excuses are needed, it just happened.

What is positive is that he learned that even if you don't have your best stuff you have to keep battling and trying to make something happen. If you do, sometimes things work out.

This kind of gritty performance shows me more than the first 2 weeks really.

Cam's shaky start and come from behind win isn't new. He's done it before at Blinn and Auburn. It's to see many of u simply know the kid based on what u heard and read on espn.

The fact that U have an QB like that is a very good thing. Not everyday is going to go the way u expect it. FYI, Cam is human. Some of u seem to either forget or don't care that he is.

o Too amped up

Cam was 'wild high' early on and often when a QB is wild high they're too pumped

o I'm not sure when it started raining but it could have been a factor

(I was flipping back on forth between a bunch of games)

After downloading and watching the 1st qtr again.

I thought the playcalling was fine, they weren't 'tight' like initially remembered/thought.

Also, Cam wasn't even as off early in the game as I thought.

*(E.g.-His 1st pass to Smith off play-action was into a very small windows and was just a hair off, it was still a catchable pass.)

The only pass that was really off on the 1st drive he was only off to Naanee.

And after re-watching the 1st qtr I think I see a possible cause for that errant pass.

There is deep Safety sitting on the numbers at the rightside numbers.

Cam probably didn't want to lead Naanee too much nor put too much air under the pass to prevent that FS from having a chance to drive on the ball/make a play on the ball.

For me, Cam's problem in the 1st series wasn't that he was off; it was his hesitancy off playaction.

He would complete the fake reach the top of his drop but the ball didn't come out in rhythm; which caused him to be late with the throw.

Being out of rhythm/late allowed the defense time to cover the once open checkdown to receivers.

This happened 3 times by my count on the 1st series 1 late pass to DeAngelo, one play he salvaged with a 6 yard scramble and 1 late pass to Shock.
