Most Hated Panther ever: Jake Delhomme?

Carl Spackler

Recommended Posts

As a Panther fan since their inception, I've supported the players who have come and gone. But the amount of hatred I've seen toward Jake since the playoffs is simply amazing. The guy had an awful game, and now everyone (literally EVERY PANTHER FAN I KNOW) wants him gone. In favor of Moore, Weinke, Peete, Vick, McNabb, any QB who has ever taken a snap. I don't understand. I supported him when he did well, was mad when he didn't but never wanted him released.

Honestly if Steve Smith kills a teammate, I honestly think he'd be absolved and people would still love him. He drops 5 passes in a playoff game, he had a rough night. DeAngelo fumbles the winning TD, he has a rough day. Jake overthrows Moose, CUT HIM!! TRADE HIM KILL HIM JUST KEEP ME FROM LOOKING AT HIM!

I hope he does get cut, and kicks our ass in a game so BoA stadium is silenced. When a Panthers player is signed, I stay loyal as long as he shows class. That's gone for anybody. In this day and age of fairweather fans, I believe that is too much to ask of any other Panther fan. At least none I've seen. How many of you hate him? All of you?

Jake did not play much at all last year.

His arm is shot, and he has Tommy John's surgery (a FIRST!). No one in football had done that.

He comes back from a career ending injury and leads the Panthers to the NFC-South championship!

He had a bad game against the team that was leading up to the last 2 minutes of the the SuperbBowl.... the same team that kicked the defending SuperBowl champs butts on the way TO the Superbowl.

Wanting to get rid of your leader when he brings you to the brink of greatness is ludicress......

Jake is not perfect, but he ain't too bad either. I say keep him!

lol he did just a week after Jake played them.

...plus he beat the Saints as well.

Correct on San Diego. So he had one 4th quarter drive to win a game all year.

Denver scored no points in the fourth quarter against the Saints. In fact Grammatica missed a field goal in the fourth quarter for NO with 5 minutes left to give Denver the win.

So lets recap. Cutler has one fourth quarter drive to wn a game in 2008. Jake has 4 fourth quarter comebacks and misses another at NY when Kasay misses the kick.

What is your point???

It's actually more like 4 is my point...

SD

Atlanta

Cleveland

Kansas City

2 of those were game-winning TD drives within the two minute warning in the fourth. In all 4 of them Denver scored last to take the lead.

funny thing about this is, 4th Q comebacks aren't even what Jay Cutler is known for as far as QB play goes.

As you said, the Atlanta game wasn't exactly a last second drive starting at almost 11 minutes left and the KC drive began in the third quarter and carried into the fourth quarter so it barely fits the criteria.

Still though the Cleveland game was very impressive though. He had 3 TD drives in the fourth quarter.

And we discussed the SD win which was clearly a last second win.

Not bad at all. But I suspect that he isn't known for it because only 2 of them were last second drives. Still it does suggest he can engineer a gamewinning drive. I learned something today.

wait.

I'm not finished. Add 4 more to his career from 2007.

Buffalo

Oakland

Pittsburgh

Minnesota

All won by Denver game winning drives in 4th quarter or overtime.

Without reviewing them all like you did, how many were within the last 5 minutes or even more germaine in the last 2 minutes?

When I began to look at different games I quickly saw that fourth quarter TD drives were actually pretty common, most quarterbacks had 3 or 4. But game winning drives in the last 5 minutes were much less common.

Interesting exception: I noticed that Brees had only one game winning drive with 6 minutes left. He did have a good fourth quarter against us in the last game of the regular season although it wasn't a game winning drive which went to Delhomme.

It doesn't exactly have to be TDs though. A lot of Jake's game winners were field goal drives. In 2007 all of Cutler's GW drives were less than 2 minutes left in regulation or in overtime. As for 2008...

SD-24 seconds left in the game.

Cleveland-Cutler 11 yard pass to Marshall with 1:17 left in regulation.

Kansas City-Cutler's TD game winner was thrown with over 10 minutes left in regulation.

Atlanta-Cutler 9 yard pass to Daniel Graham with 5:42 left in regulation. A little close to 5 minutes.

Cutler's proven himself to be a poised leader in a close game. Other close games he's had in 2008 were TB and New Orleans, and despite the low score, TB couldn't intercept Cutler and their secondary was among the best at picking QBs off (tied for 3rd overall among pass defenses in 08)

Good info. I wish more folks could discuss without personal attacks.

Nice info.

I believe Jake has 18 or 19 game winning or tying drives in the 4th quarter. Just to add info to the already nice info above if we are indeed comparing the two qb's still.
