Brandt: "Newton is the most impressive rookie QB I've seen come into the league"

Gil Brandt article on NFL.COM:

I’ve scouted thousands of players and wouldn’t make this statement lightly: Through two games, Cam Newton is the most impressive rookie quarterback I've seen come into the league.

Obviously, it's a small sample size for Newton, but he followed up his 422-yard debut with 432 passing yards against the defending world champion Packers, which feature a defense that blitzes and tries to confuse QBs as much as any team.

It looks like Newton has everything that you want in a quarterback: Size, arm strength and work ethic. While the first two traits have obviously been on display so far, the biggest question about Newton coming into the league was his attitude.

When I saw Newton in training camp, he made his share of mistakes. But what really stood out was when a drill ended, he would lead the charge to the next one. We're talking about the first overall pick in the draft. That's what you look for to see how a guy is going to be.

Another example of Newton's work habits can be traced back to when he first transferred to Auburn. In early 2010, he texted several of his new teammates, saying he would be working out every weekend if anyone wanted to join him. Initially, four guys showed. After four or five weeks, there were 40 players working out. His commitment helped Auburn win a national title.

In other news, NFL.com has the nerve, I mean the NERVE, to post an article about Blaine Gabbert having swagger. Did they get permission for that poo???

I know off topic, but that had to be served up.

We'll get our team of atorneys to slam an injunction on them asap.

Duh Brandt, we knew that and we haven't scouted 1000s of players.

Plenty of room on the Cam bandwagon for Gil.

I realize you were joking, but for those that didn't know, Brandt was one of the first analysts to say he thought Cam could be something special. He introduced Cam at his combine press conference, and consistently went out on a limb to defend him.

Gil apparently isn't as senile as some thought.

No big deal. One day during the Combine workouts, Blaine brushed up against Cam. Some of the swag brushed off on to Blaine. Cam was able to feel the swag flowing through him to Blaine but he thought, "Fug it. I got enough. Besides, that dude ugly. He could use some."

qft, unlike Charlie "don't call me Moe Howard" Casserly who clearly forgot to take his Metamucil the day he evaluated Cam.

The stats and video tapes don't lie; Cam is on track for one of the best rookie seasons ever.

People will continue to say these things as long as Cam keeps it up. I still don't hold high expectations for Cam, I know that it is a learning process. But from what I have seen, this thing is turning into something truly special.

Jacksonville is going to be an interesting game. You could say it is the first game that Cam is "expected" to win, or where he has proven the ability to be able to win. If that goes well, people are going to going crazy over him.

I think Gil Brandt is very knowledgable and insightful, but god almighty have any of you tried to listen to him on Sirius NFL Radio? He sounds awful

This is actually how he would have said it: Cam uuuhhhh Newton is uhhhh.... He's a big quarterback with uuhhhh strong arm.... is what he is.... and uuhhhh probably the most talented uuuhhhhhh rookie I've seen since I uhh scouted a small town prospect in 1952 who worked his summers out on his uncle's hog farm and could uuuuhhhhh throw a football 80 yards and uhhh hit a fence post 6 inches wide dead on....is what he could do.... now he had a couple of good years in a junior college but went on to uuhhhhh...... What were we talking about?

It's suicide worthy stuff.

Want real torture? Imagine Brandt & Lou Holtz together as analysts.

Worse than waterboarding.
