I have a moral/money between friends dilemma and once again turn to teh all knowing Huddle on how to handle this situation. I will give it to yous as unbiased as I can, please let me know what yous think is the right answer. I am involved in this situation, but Im not going to say what my part is, until later...I will try leave out most of the details to avoid the tl;dr's

So me & a few friends play poker every month at a buddy's house. Last month a guy showed up thats only been there 3 times and he brought someone nobody knew. Now this is a fairly close group, we play together regularly and its a small money ($30) poker tournament. At some point in the evening somebody decided to take most of the money for the payouts. Payouts were $170 & $100, the thief took $170, and the 2 people that won split the remaining Benjamin, both obviously not getting what each was supposed to. All that was said is "We will figure it out." So now we FF to the next game which took place last weekend..

The guy that won the tourney is looking to the host of the game to cover the money that was stolen. The host does not take any money unless he wins, there is no 'house cut' of the payouts. Is the host of the game financially responsible to reimburse the money that was stolen?

I don't play so I don't know what the norm is...but my first answer is no, the host isn't responsible..everyone is sh*t out of luck.......how did the money get taken in the first place??

The money was left out in the open for all to see. Except for the dude nobody knew, this was a game among friends... I have never run into an issue like this in my 9 years of playing, so I have no idea about the normal right answer... We pretty much know who took it, but nothing can be proven...

why would the host be responsible

if anyone should be responsible... it should be the guy who brought a friend nobody knew and potentially jacked the money in the first place (i'm assuming that's what you're assuming happened)

Mark the bills. Different colors and different places. Host takes the pot to a secure location and brings it out when it's time for the payouts.

Money's short again. Everyone empties their pockets.

Unfortunately this has happened to me before and my friends just decided that it is not worth the trouble to try and blame someone and or force someone to pay it back. So yeah thats a situation where you just have to let it go. Just chalk it up to the lost money on strippers and blow fund.

Normally the money is kept out of sight, this was a last minute game and because it was only 8 people the host left the money out, divvied up ready to pay the winners...

I seriously doubt that either of them 2 guys ever come back...

Emptying pockets is in vain, theres no way of knowing how much money a person has in their pockets when they get there... The bill denominations were all $20s & a few $10s...

You had me going for just a bit. I then recalled how we are both in the same trade and thought to myself how a similar situation could have occured had I been involved.

J2 took the money. He figured the new guy would make a convenient scapegoat, snatched the ca$h and said nothing.

Come to find out the new guy was above reproach so J2 comes on here, gives us this pretty story and then he will show the other players that he couldn't have done it because he is going out of his way and using teh huddle brain trust to help figure out who the culprit really was.
