Peppers and Cutler some thoughts

One former Gm's take on what it would take to acquire Cutler.

Cutler goes for two No. 1 picks and a player, or he doesn't go at all

So that means we give them Peppers (worth 2 number 1s) and Josh McCown so Cutler can back up Jake for a year or two until he learns how to be a leader!

Sounds good to me!!:D

I think Peppers plus Delhomme plus another 1st/2nd is what it would take to get Cutler.....= not worth it.

No need to bring up Steve Smith's stats.

This is a discussion about quarterbacks we're having.

That shows he's last in amount of Yac yards in the league and 1st in Air Yards per Attempt. Meaning fewer of his yards came from his Receiver's Yac then anyone else, while more of his yards were actually in the air per attempt then anyone else in the league.

Pennington also wouldn't have the arm strength to operate in our offense, not only that but he's a veteran, of course he's going to be better used to handling the media, or did you forget his meltdown berating the press in 2004 on 3 separate occasions... He's really a shining example of how to behave... He did the exact same thing then that Cutler has done now, and now you're saying he's a shining example of how to behave, that he's smart, a great leader and rock steady... not exactly.

Pennington has the arm strength to operate in Henning's offense which WAS the Panthers offense. No he doesn't have a cannon like Cutler's, but I think it is a sufficient arm for the NFL.

I remember one time, don't remember the year but Herm was the HC of the Jets when the press said something to Chad that he countered back strongly on. I also recall thinking he was correct to do it. I also recall that Herm Edwards let him twist in the wind by not backing him publicly on it but he never whined to the press about Herm. It was not 3 separate incidents that I recall. Perhaps you could provide me with a link to a story talking about the three incidents so I can respond. He definitely was not doing the same thing as Cutler though which would be refusing to attend OTAs and asking publicly for a trade.

It's a low move to compare him to couch and leaf, especially because he's vastly out performed them in his first three years anyway.

I was comparing their maturity levels not their accomplishments in the NFL.

Besides, players don't care all that much about what is said in the media between a guy and his front office, it's none of their business anyway. They care if a player comes out says something about another player, but not if a guy is talking to the front office or about the coach. What they care about is what that guy does on sunday and Jay Cutler is probably one of the toughest players in the NFL.

Do they care when they get called out publicly by their QB? Because that's what he did to Marshall, and that's what he did to his ENTIRE DEFENSE after they lost to the Chargers in the last game of the year. If you think that shows maturity, then you have a different definition of that word than I do.

You want to talk about mental toughness. After all the mess with the rumors had quietened down, after the coach and GM had made public comments about it all, Cutler called them, HE set up the meeting, HE went, HE apologised, HE was ready to move on and McDaniels didn't even apologise McDaniels didn't offer to bury the hatchet or mend the fence, his head coach said to him, "yeah I wanted another guy".

I have never seen that version, that Cutler is the one who called McDaniels and that he apologized. Where did you see that? All I know is that he refused to meet McDaniels in person and agreed only to a phone call.

Cutler could've held out, refused to visit the facility, but he went back, and he tried to patch things up and the coach and the team made a poor effort. After the meeting Cutler hung around, hoping McDaniels would reconsider what he said, so that he and Cutler could smooth things over just the two of them, but his coach didn't want to.

He is not showing up for OTAs on a team installing a new offense. He is the QB. That shows lack of maturity in my book. I also read that he refused to meet with McDaniels WITHOUT his agent being present. While that is certainly his right, it is not what you are saying he wanted to do.

What a weak minded guy he must be, lets break down his performance:

sticks with a pathetic college team and fights hard week in and out, never once blaming his line, his team or his coaches.

He goes to one of the toughest markets for a QB in the NFL and he plays well for three years, with a defense, running game and offensive line falling apart around him,

his coach is fired, his team mates get arrested, into trouble and some leave and he still comes to work everyday without major complaint.

He was publicly pissed over Shanny and his QB coach getting the ax. He complained about Marshall to the press. How is Denver one of the toughest markets in the NFL? Because of Elway's shadow? If that is what you are thinking, he invited ridicule when he scoffed at Elway's arm strength compared to his. It shows an extreme lack of a clue to compare yourself favorably in any way to a guy who is a legend in the town you are playing QB in.

His team tries to acquire another quarterback and he says, well I'm sorry for my part lets move on and his coach won't apologise and put it behind them and you wonder why he doesn't want to remain in denver?

What would you have the guy do...

I have said it elsewhere and I will say it again here...I don't blame him one bit for being PISSED about it...not one bit. It's totally understandable he would be pissed. I blame him for talking about it to the press AT ALL...EVEN ONCE. And especially voicing a trade demand in the press. I don't know that he was lied to, I think he feels that since they told him there were inquiries about him and that they didn't reassure him he was their guy, he interpreted that to mean they were open to trading him. McDaniels said publicly they weren't trading him. It sounds like he wants reassurance that the job belongs to him. I understand his feelings, but the fact of life in the NFL is that when a new HC comes in, no one's job is really safe. And certainly it is likely that as inexperienced as McDaniels is, he screwed up parts of this whole thing...but it doesn't excuse the show Cutler is putting on now. Also, it is telling that I heard the owner publicly backed McDaniels and said that he was disappointed in Cutler's reaction to all this. That alone should tell him that he needs to address these things privately...period.

As to what I want him to do, how about sacking up and reporting to OTAs instead of taking it out on your teammates because you may be less prepared to run the new offense the longer you stay away? That's what a leader does, thinks of the team and his teammates FIRST. Yes I have heard him say he loves his teammates and loves playing in Denver...but talk is cheap. Leaders walk the walk. Leaders realize that if they don't help sell the new HC and his program then the other guys on the roster are going to have a tougher time buying into it and it will be harder for the TEAM to succeed.

This guy has been a model team mate, he's been the model of maturity and now when everything lets him down and he looks to leave, leave a team that doesn't want him anyway, something that NEVER ends well in the NFL, HE's is the problem and he's a child and all of a sudden after being the best young quarterback in the NFL, that makes him a worse option than Jake Delhomme, or for that matter Tim Couch....

Great logic...

I don't know what his teammates think of him. Some probably like him, some probably wish he would STFU. But I can't call him a model teammate let alone the model of maturity after everything I detailed above.

Having more talent/potential does not mean you are the better option for a particular team. And I already outlined what I thought his talent advantage was..and to me it isn't worth the money & draft picks and/or players to HOPE he can mature. I don't think he's some T.O. or something, but as I have said many times, I expect a QB to be a leader. I expect more of a QB behavior wise than I do from a WR or RB, etc.

According to a GM, he already has a rep:

One NFL general manager emailed me, saying Cutler's immaturity has plagued him throughout his Broncos' tenure. Consequently, prospective suitors are forewarned that Cutler may look great on Sunday, zipping passes on the field, but that he has poor practice habits, has never been a lover of watching film or isn't a leader like Tom Brady.

I will be offline for a few days so I won't be able to respond if you counter.

To Carpanfan...some nice info. Where did you get those stats?

A little more background on that from PFT...

A couple of weeks ago, Peter King of SI.com reported, almost in passing, that Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler asked to be traded after quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates left for USC. If true, this would make Cutler’s outrage over nearly being traded a tad, shall we say, phony.

Now, John Czarnecki of FOXSports.com adds some meat to the bone, reporting that agent Bus Cook was “begging” the Broncos to trade Cutler before the failed attempt to send him to a new team.

“Denver told him no from the beginning,” Czarnecki writes. “But somehow Cook has been able — how hilarious is this? — to paint Cutler as some victim in the cruel world of NFL trade talk.

Cook was begging for Cutler trade

Drrrrraaaaama Queeeennnnn :nonod:

Florio has also reported that no big name draftee signed on with Cook this year, so essentially a bonanza contract for Cutler is his only shot at a big payday this season. He added also that Cook's history has been to cause more division than harmony between his clients and their teams (see also: Favre, Brett).

I'd have to look up whether Cook has any clients that are on the Panthers. Regardless, I know of one client of his that isn't going to be anytime soon.

Jake Delhomme is 34...he's a subpar career qb who is over the hill and better suited as a back up. Those comeback wins this year really didn't mean much considering how bad he bombed it in this years playoffs. Not to mention how many times even I have notice Steve Smith bail him out and make an amazing catch.

Jay Cutler on the other hand is 25 with tremendous upside to him...strong arm and VERY competitive. Statistically what Jay has done in 3 years it took Jake 7 and please don't tell me how its unfair to compare considering Jake wasn't a starter...there was a REASON why he wasn't starting.

Simply put Jay Cutler is a franchise qb and Jake Delhomme isn't. If somehow you guys were able to acquire Jay Cutler combined with that running game of yours I could honestly see a Superbowl within the next 5 years and i'm not even a Panthers fan.

agree on Jake and his age and Cutler and his(plus he's already pro-bowl caliber). If they could get Denver to deal, I think its a no brainer and worth the gamble for the simple fact Jake's days are numbered as it is and we need a new QB soon.

Cutlers Arm throwing to Steve Smith could be a great combination.

If I was dallas, I'd tried to trade Romo for Cutler straight up. I'd look at Romo and say, 'this guy is a flash in the pan' and gamble. Would create a buzz in dallas going into next season with new stadium.
