Getting a dog from a breeder vs shelter

The cat comment aside.

Adopting a rescue is honorable and all but there should be no shame in researching and purchasing a pure bred you want and will give a loving home to for the duration. So go for it if that's what you want.

Personally we have 2 Bengal cats in our house purchased from breeders. My daughter has allergy issues and Bengals are not a problem in that area. Would make no sense to adopt a stray and then have to give it back since your kid cant breath.

Do your research and choose what is best for you.

Back about 1996 my then Fiancée HAD to have an Old English Sheep Dog.

I wanted to get a dog from the Charlotte Humane So. But she HAD to have an Old English Sheep Dog with papers. So I told her to find a reputable breeder and we go look at the puppies.

On the way there, I asked he if she knew how to choose a puppy. She said that she had dogs before, she wasn't an idiot. I told her not puppies that your Dad or Mother brought home, but choosing a puppy. She said of course she did.

We no sooner go there and I asked to see the parents. The breeder said that wasn't possible, that the male was too aggressive. (RED FLAG!)

I told my Fiancée what the guy said, and she said, that didn't mean the puppies would be that way. So instead of paying with the puppies then walking away and coming back and let the puppy choose you. she looked them over and promptly said, "We'll take that one. It has the best markings."

I asked her what did markings have to do with a good puppy. She said that she wanted to breed him and that the puppy had to be a male and have good markings. (So much for "How to Choose a puppy!")

2 years later I had to take him to the vet and put him down. He was so aggressive that he would attack her! (He was OK with me, but I was the one who make him behave, so he looked at me as the Alpha Dog.)

It wasn't the dog's fault, but my Fiancées. No sooner than I got the ashes back, than she started up again, wanting a Old English Sheep Dog. I told her that it would be a cold day in H*** before we got any dog.

Several years later, I went to the Humane so. to adopt dogs and ended up adopting a cat. No longer have the Fiancee, but 10 years later, I still have the cat! :D

do you see a lot of epilepsy in your beagles? our little guy has it and has seizures once a month or so... vet says it's fairly common in beagles

I wouldn't say it's common in field trial, hunting beagles. I've raised and ran alot of beagles and never had one have an epileptic seizure. I have a good friend who has raised beagles for 40 years and he says he has had 1 have it.

But from time to time I read on the rabbit hunting forums I look at,someone will have one that has epilepsy. Sometimes in that case it's a running fit

( sugar gets low dog becomes disoriented and leaves the pack to go sit down and recuperate) Scary first time you ever see one do this . But it's not a shaking uncontrollabe epileptic type seizure.

Real sorry to hear yours has it, I'm sure hes still an awesome pet. Beagles are the best!

oh yeah, he's absolutely a fantastic dog. doesn't let it hold him back one bit. it was just terrifying the first time we saw him have a seizure. :( now he's to the point that he tries to milk them for extra attention... little bastard :D

Selling pups vs training for work are two completely different peoples. Ideally you want a dog from a working line.

Maybe you could point me in the right direction for a reputable trainer/school for the GSD.

Yes selling pups just to make a buck normally results in 2 plain ol plugs with numerous faults being thrown together to breed.

In my case I breed the best I have to the best I can find and watch run.

I research pedigrees up one side and down the other to capitalize on genetics from years past from both parents.

I don't breed them just to watch them do it. I breed them with a specific purpose and goal in mind.

I'm sorry I don't know any training schools to help you out.

I train all mine personally in the briar thickets and clear cuts of North & South Carolina. And they are judged in the field under the gun.

That's why dogs from working lines (if possible for that breed) is the best way to go for dogs with papers.

They've had the genetic weaknesses culled out of them to a greater degree than those that breed family pets.

I'm kind of worried about this with the GSD too. Nobody else is really an authority with him but me. I'm afraid he's gonna walk all over everyone else when he matures.

I guess my friend who was left in a dumpster when he was an infant could help it? I come from a single mother home and I know for a fact making ends meet isn't the easiest thing in the world. GTFO with this hippie BS.

I'm glad domesticated animals were there to rescue him. You guys should have gotten a pet dog to help ends meet.
