A Look at Panthers Future Needs

With the recent injury to TD it got me thinking about what positions we need to look at in the future, so I just wrote where I think we stand at each position and when and what improvements need to be made in the future. Did offense tonight.

QB: Cam Newton

- Set, I am convinced like the majority of you that he is our franchise qb for the next 10 to 15 years. He has shown it on the field these first two games and most importantly he has the "it" factor and thats what you need.

RB: D-Will, J-Stew, Goodson

- I'm not worried about D-Will at this point, its two games in a new system, new blocking schemes and an O-Line that has yet to mesh. Having said that, how much does he have left in the tank? He will be 30 in a couple of years and while he didnt get wear and tear in his first two season, or through 2008-2010 because of splitting carries, he was a work horse at Memphis and we are locked into him for a while. This begs the question, what to do w/ Stewy when his contract comes up? He is younger and we all know the talent and the back he can be and at this point he seems to fit better in this Chud offense at least in the passing game. I have no doubt he would wanna stay w/ D-Will, but at what cost, RB's gotta get theirs and he will get paid, can that be us? I dont know. Finally we have Goodson. I think he can run the rock more than he does, but he needs to fix the fumbling problem. I think he can be utilized as a Sproles type player in Chuds offense in the coming years.

WR: Smitty, LaFell, Gettis

- We need a replacement for Smitty. I think Smitty has 3 to 4 good years in him and he will wanna stay w/ Cam. However we need an heir apparent. Can LaFell be that guy, I dont think so he is a number 2 in my mind. What about Gettis, I am really high on him, but there are questions now, will he have his speed back? I think we can explore for a number 2 within and outside the organization, but I think we need to look at a receiver in the 1st round a couple of years down the road, but not at this point in time.

TE: Olsen, Shockey, Hartsock

- We are set, Olsen is our guy and will be for a long while. However Chud likes these 2 TE sets and Shockey wont be around forever, his contract runs through 2012-2013. We are gonna need to look for a young athletic TE as his replacement in the next year or two. Hartstock is strictly a blocker as we all know.

Tackle: Gross, Otah

- Gross is 31 and his play has diminished some what, but I still think he is a upper echelon tackle in this league. However, like I said he is 31, but lineman do have long careers, I think he has 4 to 5 good years left in him, but I think this is a position we should look at in earlyish round the next couple of years. That takes me to Otah, can he stay healthy. I have no doubt he can be a mauler, he has shown it, but he is too injury prone, can he get over that? If he can we are set for a good while at RT, but I think we should get ourselves some Otah insurance and have a young guy waiting in the wings. Byron Bell can he be that, maybe, he held his own on Sunday.

Guard: Wharton, Hangartner

- I think Wharton is still solid and has a couple of good years in him, but I think guard is a position we need to adress in free agency and the draft next year (3rd-5th). Some of this also depends on how Gary Williams and some of the other young interior lineman are viewed by the coaches.

Center: Kalil

- One of the best Centers in the NFL, we are set, nuff said.

Defense:

Hardy and Johnson will be wreaking havoc for a while.

Fua and McClain are still questions but may just be a good pair.

LBs.

Connor is prob the only one we can call a starter at this point with Beason's carrer up in the air and David being done. We went from dominate to draft need.

CBs

Prob our biggest weakness

Gamble still has a few year left but its time for a heir apparent.

Capt has good coverage skills but is a better nickle back.

S

Martin and Godfrey look like hot and cold players at this point and are questions for sure.

As you said we are set at TE. As long as we continue to provide Cam someone to throw to and give him that protection, we will be fine. So WR and the guard positions are probably the ones to keep an eye on. Running game will coming along, not worried about it heading into the future.

I will do a complete one on the defense tomorrow, but I agree for the most part. I disagree on Beason a little, if it was a complete tear I would agree, but it was only a partial tear.
