Did we misuse money on DeAngelo?

D Will is an all time great running back. Don't think for a minute he isn't. For the record, SINCE THE MERGER OF THE TWO LEAGUES IN 1969 OR SO, BASED ON FIRST 500 CAREER CARRIES, HE RANKS NUMBER TWO IN THE LAST 42 YEARS IN YARDS PER CARRY. IF THAT IS NOT IMPRESSIVE WHAT IS?

Let me re-phrase the above. His running skills, and combination of power and moves, are equal to virtually any back that has ever played. I can't say he is an all time great, he has not played enough. But is he as good as anyone considered an all time great? Yes. No doubt. Numbers do not lie.

The above being said, NO BACK can gain yards without a push from the offensive line. No back can get the ball while running parallel to the line, then have to make a cut and re-gain speed and get good yardage.

Neither back is running well. Point is: BASED on talent (not the above) he should have been re-signed. His numbers based on yards per carry AND other factors show he is at least the equal of any other back in the league.

However, one can make a case that if this offense just is pass first, run second, and nothing else, there are other backs that can carry 5 times a game also. If he continues in the long run to get 7 yards per carry, yes, perhaps the money could have been spent elsewhere. Keep in mind, however, he was owed SOMETHING for being underpaid for all these years.

Too early to tell on this one. Things should smooth out a bit. Let's wait and see and not have knee jerk reactions. His talent is still there, but with no fullback, and running out of a shotgun, and poor blocking, no one else would do better.

Bottom line: No back who is paid premium dollars should be getting five carries a game. And you don't need to split 12 carries for two backs. Question is: What do you do with Jonathan Stewart when his contract is up?

Williams' slow start begain when he went to IR in 2009. He has never started backup again......

people continue to overlook that and try to explain it away.

Chud ain't afraid to run a productive RB....his past has proven that. But Chud nor we should be looking for Foxball and Fox usage of RBs.

The DeAngleo move was a bad move the moment Fox left.

DeAngelo went on the IR in 2009? I had no idea. I think you are a year early.

Last year was really the only major injury he had. And because of the state of our team, there was no use in rushing him back. So how are you to "start back up again' in this offense?

If people here know we are pass happy then you can be damn sure that opposing defensive coordinators know that as well. The "they are dedicated to stopping the run" line is B.S. at this point. Maybe last year or the year before but not today.

I'm kinda ticked off at what Jordon Gross told a reporter! Maybe we wasted money on him! Mouthing off about how Chud should have run the ball more inside the 20 and not giving them a chance. Dude, they did and the line just isn't blocking! You got called for a holding call and the other plays were not positive. We have done great in the running back dept. Maybe D-Lo will give some of it back to invest in the line though!

I told y'all this months ago, spending that money could have went elsewhere other than a position we already have tremendous depth in..

JStew can't carry this team by himself? how stoopid most of you sound now.. the dude already is.

the effectiveness of our running game is irrelevant to whether DWill was worth keeping around.. Stew already is taking majority of the snaps, and we have great depth at RB.. our OLine won't kick it into gear until week 10-13.

regardless of how teams play us, keeping DWill was NOT the right move..

edit: Deangelo, I still love you though..

ir or not, williams has only played 2 full seasons since being drafted.

i was all for him being re-signed, but not if he had to carry the ball 200+ times a season, and certainly not for a blockbuster contract.

That was the only way he would have been signed. He was a commodity and other teams would have paid similar dollars. He wasn't going to take a discount.

And as far as only playing 2 full seasons, that's a bit off base. You act like this guy is injury prone. Last year was really the only year in which he wasn't healthy. His rookie year he played 13 games and 2009 played 13 games. I can live with that as a RB. It's not like these injuries are related or are effecting his play, then I'd be concerned.

You point to this injury thing like it's a problem of his and it clearly isn't.

Oh boy....

By this logic Cam Newton is the greatest QB if all time after his first two games. I don't care what he did for his first 500 carries. I care about his next 500 carries.

Let me re-phrase the above. His running skills, and combination of power and moves, are equal to virtually any back that has ever played. I can't say he is an all time great, he has not played enough. But is he as good as anyone considered an all time great? Yes. No doubt. Numbers do not lie.?

This is all based on opinion. He isn't even close to Terrell Davis and Priest Holmes...RB's that were great for a couple years then disappeared. Dwill has had more years on injury reserve than he has impressive seasons. I wished it was the opposite.

The above being said, NO BACK can gain yards without a push from the offensive line. No back can get the ball while running parallel to the line, then have to make a cut and re-gain speed and get good yardage.?

If he is truly one of the GOATs that shouldnt matter. If he had a dominant run blocking oline we could plug in any rb and get his kind of production.

Neither back is running well. Point is: BASED on talent (not the above) he should have been re-signed. His numbers based on yards per carry AND other factors show he is at least the equal of any other back in the league.?

What are these other factors?

we agree

special backs can create if he is not a special back then he shouldnt be paid like one

I would have let Dwill walk and signed Jstew to an extension. When Stews was up I'd let him walk and plug in a RB.
