Did we misuse money on DeAngelo?

Make whatever excuses and promises you want. He hasn't been effective since mid-season 2009 but still got the big contract, and that's what this thread is about. Knee jerk judgements????

this.

including his signing bonus, deangelo williams is pocketing almost $23m dollars this season for nothing.

if this deal was done right after 2008, it would be cool.

but it's 3 seasons later and he's done nothing but declined.

Did we misuse money on DeAngelo Williams?

I am not saying Williams is not worth the money or he is to blame because the running game is stagnant. But what I am saying is maybe not worth the money in this system. We already had JStew under contract and could have used DeAngelo's money on say a CB.

Love DeAngelo, just wonder if the money could have been more wisely used in places of need.

As much as I like him, I feel RB's other than Peterson are a dime a dozen. I would never pay huge money to a RB if I were an owner.

The last time Deangelo Williams had a 100+ yard game was 11/19/09 against the Dolphins. 22 months ago. His last TD was against New Orleans on 10/3/10. Before that, his last TD was 11/8/09 against New Orleans. For the record, the Panthers lost all those games.

You do realize that he rarely gets more than 20 carries, and usually gets only about 15 or so, right? That's a product of having two good RB's and it will only prolong Williams career. He hasn't lost anything. Every RB needs blocking too. You can't expect him to make his own holes.

And yes, this is a ridiculous knee jerk reaction poll, based on 2 games with a brand new coaching staff. Give it a minute and then make a judgement.

And BTW, why are you worried about this money anyway? You're not paying him personally, and the Panthers have plenty of cap room to sign FA's and draft picks next year, so this doesn't hurt the team one bit.

I thought the money was misused the minute I heard about the deal. These first 2 games haven't changed my mind. He's going to have to show up BIG TIME to justify the deal he got. It fact it's nearly statistically impossible for him to have enough impact to justify it.

sooo...2 weeks into the season and we can already tell what was needed or not needed?

alrighty.....

has nothing to do with if he can make plays in this offense....he can.

point is we moved out of the Fox era.....we want to pass more and with a rookie QB we will be forced to pass more. Plenty of guys who can do a comparable job at his position.......and while he is on the sideline either by our choice or from an opponent forcing it....his payday could of put someone else on the field to stop opponents passing games.

Giving Williams that cash would have made more sense if this was 10 years ago......game is played different and we have running backs. Once we can't use at the moment. Williams is old......could of used it on a position that when we are ready to really compete.....that guy will still be in his prime and ready to be part of it (and that won't be Williams)

My problem isn't giving Deangelo the money, because he could still turn it around and have a good season. It's the fact they didn't need him with Stewart and Goodson on the roster. It's Hurney's poor decision making giving out contracts to players that don't deserve it. The main example is Jake Delhomme. He was coming off the worst game of his career and still was given big bucks. The same goes for Deangelo Williams...he hadn't shown anything worth giving him that kind of money in 2 years but was still given a huge contract. Of all the resigning contracts Hurney drew up this offseason, Williams above and beyond the most questionable.
