Smitty actually has a higher per game average right now so he's on pace to break Rice's record regardless. He'll beat Rice by exactly 100 yards.

Unfortunately Welker might beat him anyway. Compared to the QBs Rice and Welker had/have I find it a lot more impressive for Smitty to have accomplished what he has. I hope he gets a ring sooner than later.
