Think we miss Jim Skipper?

Is it any wonder why DeAngelo Williams pleaded with Ron Rivera to keep Jim Skipper on board?

Two games in, our running backs have been nonexistent? Is it because of a new offense that simply runs the ball less? It's obvious that John Fox and Ron Rivera have two different approaches to running an offense. Fox believed in running the ball, running down the clock, keeping your defense rested, keeping the game close and trying to squeeze a win in at the end with a field goal. Boring as it was to watch at times, we had some great runs.

I know Cam is young and the team wants the kid to gain his confidence, so they are letting him air it out and have some fun which is the RIGHT thing to do. At some point through, he'll have to slow it down and we'll need to rely on our run game to create nice long drives.

Unless the Panthers are going in a NEW direction, with a high powered offense that will light it up? If that's the case, why did we resign a guy like Williams for $43 million? I could think of a lot of cheaper backs that we could have signed instead, especially if running the ball was going to be less than 10% of our offensive focus. :confused:

To be fair though, I know little about our new running backs coach John Settle. Jim Skipper's resume speaks for itself. The guy is a legend, who has helped develop over 8 thousand yard rushers and 6 pro-bowlers. I'm not saying John Settle can't be great, but I definitely see him as a downgrade thus far.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think we miss Jim Skipper.

The thing is I remember how bad our running game tends to be off the line in the season anyway. Happens about every year takes a few weeks for Williams/Stewart to go crazy. I think its due to oline play rather then because of the RBs.

I do think he's a part of the problem.

Notice the backs don't look to improvise by bouncing outside or changing direction now. They don't seem to hit the hole as hard either. He was one guy I thought made a ton of since to keep.

we haven't run with them because they haven't done poo when we give them the ball...

It's the o-line's fault for not making any holes, not the scheme, not chud's, not rivera, it's on the o-line.

Pretty sure this is what's actually happening:

1. Cardinals sent the house every play to rattle Cam, and obviously that'd stop the run game as well.

2. The Packers are a top five defense. Ryan Pickett and BJ Raji are great against the run. Clay Matthews is one of the best defensive players in the game. We should all be stunned that we somehow managed to stay in that game because of Cam and the defense.

3. Probably a wee bit too aggressive to start the game.

The coaches know what they're doing. The run game will pick up eventually. We have a brutal schedule at the moment so we will probably have to wait but it'll come.

Thats what I've noticed for years...we've never been excellent in the running game...UNTIL about midway through the season...we got to have consistency from the beginning...but these RB catches aren't bad...you get Stewart and D'Angelo in open space and its all down hill from there...

I think that is giving too much credit to Jim Skipper.

First off it's a totally different scheme. Skipper doesn't call the plays he just coaches the backs. Also, no coach is going to be able to help with lack of holes in the run game. I am sure rhythm is also playing a factor too.

But coaching is the last place I'd look to when it comes to our running game. It's not like they are forgetting everything he taught them, if he is such a good coach.

Be patient. The running game is coming. This is the same offense guys like Tomlinson, Priest Holmes and Jamal Lewis beasted in. It's hard not to think the same for DeAngelo and Stewart.
