...when they get the crap beat out of them and complain about teams running up scores/celebrating.

You've got this discussion about Arthur Blank being pissed about Vick in "garbage time" last season and Ryan Clark saying the Ravens "tried to embarass" the Steelers...

So childish... it's PRO football. You get paid to win. If you don't want them to score, stop them. If the Panthers had the opposing team down by 50 points, and scored another TD... good for them. If someone has us down by 50 and is still trying to score, we need to stop them... stop whining you big babies. You make millions of dollars to play a game and WIN.

I don't get upset about it, I mean a loss is a loss (unless I'm gambling, then I might get upset (or happy depending on the situation)) but it's annoying because it devalues records and overall it's just poor strategy.

For example, Peyton Manning set the TD record at 49 in 15 games, he sat all but the first drive of the 16th game. But people still claim Brady had a better year when he threw 50 even though he frequently kept throwing in garbage time and played the entire 16th game.

But anyway, my strategy is if someone has us down by 50 and is still trying to score, attempt to injure them until they take out their starters :p

Granted... if you are up 3 or more TDs with 4 minutes or less left... increasing your lead does not ensure your victory any more.

So why does it matter?

It affects playoff seeding.

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION

If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.

Two Clubs

Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).

Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.

Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.

Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.

Strength of victory.

Strength of schedule.

Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.

Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.

Best net points in common games.

Best net points in all games.

Best net touchdowns in all games.

Coin toss

Lets say a team like the Seahawks matched division records with a rival, say, the Rams. It is conceivable that they could have matching stats and ranks all the way down to the categories where you break the tie with scores.

Now lets say the Rams played New England that year and got destroyed 65 to 3, but did well against all their other losses. All the sudden, they are out of contention for that playoff berth.

Sure, you can make the claim that running up the score helps your seeding. But chances are, if you are able to go more than 3TDs come 4th quarter against an opponent in the NFL, you're already good enough to have the wins to get into the playoffs. All you're doing is potentially shutting another club's chances down.

It also can be said that a blow out loss helps a coach's chance at being fired if they are in the hot seat. Almost every coach in this league has been on the bubble at some point in their career. It's kind of disrepectful to put another coach in that position when you clearly have the game in hand.

Anyhow... just some thoughts on the why's.
