Steve Smith in HOF?

I dont know how else to say this...let me make this a plain as possible.

John Fox is a conservative coach....meaning field position/ball control/run first coach.

IF WE WERE NOT 32nd IN PASS ATTEMPTS STEVE SMITH WOULD MOST LIKELY HAVE MORE CATCHES,YRDS AND TD'S.:boxing_smiley:

No need to break out the caps, I know what you meant. I even agreed with you.

As a rookie, Smith rarely played Wideout and was out for 15 games in 04' so if he hadn't missed so much time, his stats could easily have looked like this.

8 Years - 670 Rec. - 9,500 Yds. - 55 Tds. - 5 Pro Bowls - Over 300 Rush Yds!

This compares nicely to other players stats.

But that's hypotheticals. HoF voters don't look at hypotheticals very often. An exception would be Gale Sayers. He needs to have a good 4 more years to even be considered.

It's a lock no matter what stats are. Triple Crown Winners don't come around that often. It won't be solely because of that either, it will be for the way he plays and the incredible things he does when it counts. Listening to the way other fans, announcers, analysts and coaches talk about him, I'm saying definitely.

Those folks who think Smith would be better off with another quarterback are the same folks who say Jake always looks for Smith and no one else. Simple logic would suggest that if he were indeed always looking for Smith then Smith's numbers would be better than they would be if he were in an offense with more receiving weapons. Plus the long throws to Smith where Jake chucks it up and Smith gets it, just highlights his jumping skills and comeptitive nature.

From those standpoints Jake is the perfect quarterback to give Smith HOF numbers. His triple crown in 2005 was largely due to him being our primary weapon. If we had several more weapons his catches would be diluted significantly.

It is true that his overall performance is hampered by our run first offense in regards to putting up huge numbers but that is taken in account by the HOF committee. They are also looking for YPC and longevity, probowl appearances etc. If he plays another 4 years and puts up at least 10,000 yards, 8 Pro bowl appearances, 90 TDs and a YPC of 12 or better, he will surely get consideration.

Since there are only 20 WR's in the modern era history of pro football in the Hall of Fame, and:

1) S. Smith isn't in the top 31 in receiving yards, I'd say it's a loooong shot.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nfl&id=3797013

.... and 2) since only 1 (one) of the top 10 all time leaders in receptions is in the HOF, I'd say it HIGHLY unlikely.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/alltime/leaders?cat=receivers

Yards alone won't be the determining factor for example. Shannon Sharpe was a finalist this year even though he was not in the top 10. But as a tight end he was up there and had a very good career. Moose and Keyshawn Johnson both have lots of yards but neither will be considered for the HOF since they had good careers but not great ones. There are a lot of other guys with great numbers and stats in some areas but are deficit in others. Look at Andre Reed. He was a finalist with his 13000 yards but he had only one season with more than 10 Tds. And he had only 4 years with more than 1000 yards. But he was durable, played 16 years, had 7 probowl appearances and was sixth in all-time receptions. So they look at a number of things.

Also you top 10 list is misleading since only 3 of those guys are even eligible for the HOF. Monk is in, Reed was a finalist this year and Carter has been on 2 ballots. Rice and Brown will be eligible in 2009. The rest will be well down the road.

Makes you laugh, doesn't it?

One of the big things you need to get in to the Hall of Fame is an "advocate" in the press, a guy who pushes heavily for you among the HOF voters. Usually that's a local beat writer, and I don't know that we have anyone in position to do that.

If we did, you'd think there would be more a push for Sam Mills :sosp:

I'll have to disagree there...

Only Jerry Rice has caught more TDs. And outside of him only Marcus Allen and Emmit Smith have more TDs (Marcus is in and Emmit is about to get in). 9 1,000 yard seasons, 6 pro bowls, 5 time first team all pro. Like him or not, his productivity and work ethic as a receiver can not be denied.
