I do feel sorry for him in the fact that his child support is that high. That is a system that needs adjusting.

I do not feel sorry for him for being broke. There is no sense in making the kind of money these guys make and blowing it on all the junk they blow it on. He could have lived a great lifestyle and still tucked half of his contract into an investment account and been set for quite some time. He may not have been set for life, but there is no excuse for him being broke in this short of time.

Read a great article about landry fields (the knicks rookie last year) and how he hired an adviser to manage his low by nba standards salary (he was a 2nd round pick, so het didn't get much more than the min) and how he was set to last the nba lockout plus much more. Thats what these guys should be doing, Landry was making several 100k and was prepared to last several years. Where as some of these guys who have been in the leagues more than one year and made 10s of millions can;t manage poo.

However, we can all laugh at them but no one knows what it is truly like until they are in their shoes. I am sure there are a few players who truly couldn't control going bankrupt or were way to nice after coming from a poverty stricken neighborhood and went broke giving money to friends/family. Still not an excuse but it is sad. Hell I spent way more than I should have while in college, I can't imagine being how old I am no and with millions of dollars. Thats why you need to have someone smarter than yourself control your money (unless you are into financial management and investing....and really good at it).

you would think the first thing you would do is get an accountant/money manager or at the very least an adviser...these guys have a very small window were they can make a lot of money and they just waste it like its going to last forever

People can say what they want about him being broke, but the fact is these gold-digging sluts ruin these guys. The government needs to set things to where it doesn't matter who knocks you up, you get a set amount for child support. No one needs 100k each year to "support their child."

What's the statistic? Something like 78% of NFL players are broke 2 years after their last season? That's off the top of my head, so it could be off...

What's the average NFL player though? I would bet the average player makes maybe 750K over their entire career which is probably just a couple years. Recalculate that statistic with players that are starters or have had at least 2 contracts that lasted 4 years.

The average NFL player is a practice squad scrub.

Child support is necessary as it helps to prevent poverty and discourages men from leaving. Encouraging strong families is important in any civilization. $132,000 a year does sound like a lot, but it honestly isn't that much for someone planning to make 47 million dollars (He was released early and lost out on 8 million of the 55 million). If child support is paid for 18 years, the man will have contributed 2.376 million dollars to the upbringing of his child.

Also, the many who have criticized child support seem to have no issue with McCalister having wasted tens of millions on God knows what, but they have a problem with him having to invest 2.376 million in his child.

The numbers for his income change after tax, but It's still absurd that he was able to spend all of it just a couple years out of the NFL.

I do believe there are women who want to get impregnated by these rich athletes. That 's a part of our culture. There are women who have children from multiple men just so they can receive more welfare benefits. Nobody ever said that life was fair.
