Meniscus Tear

TerriblePizza

Recommended Posts

My doctor seems to think I've torn my lateral meniscus in my left knee. I'm going to get an X-Ray and MRI so that he can confirm the diagnosis.

Anybody ever have the surgery? Whats the procedure and recovery like?

I did and it healed on its own but took months and months. Apparently the recovery for surgery is months and months as well...

Any surgery on a tendon is many months of recovery. My doc told me when I had my rotator cuff surgery that it was 12 months until 100%. It feels 100% now (9 months now) but it's not 100% strength yet.

It was 6 weeks before I was allowed to move it actively, 4 months before I could lift 5 lbs., and another month before I could lift unlimited weight... so that was 5 months before I could start strengthening it. I'm sure a knee is similar. You just have to be patient, but I wouldn't count on "just letting it heal." Listen to the dr.

I didn't but they stuck a needle in it and drew fluid and decided it was probably a meniscus tear because of the blood. Or something like that.

I had put off going for a while - like a month - and it was getting better but really really slowly. Could barely walk at first.

Doc basically said if it kept getting better fine but get ready for probable surgery. After like 6 months it went away.

Plenty of buddies have had the arthroscopic and it takes a while to heal

Yours sounds much worse than mine. I can still walk fine, but I have a lot of swelling and pain.

As a radiologist as well as someone who has torn their meniscus and had arthroscopic surgery, its not bad. MRI is definitive study for diagnosis. Got my knee scoped and Ortho gave me crutches which I used for about 6 hours the next morning, felt like I didn't need them so I didn't use them. Went to rehab for a few weeks, was told I couldn't golf for 3 months but I was back playing in about 2. Happened about 9-10 years ago, have had no trouble since. Understand that I'm 44 and not the most active guy anymore but I've had no trouble. Knee will occasionally pop and click but so does my other knee and there is no pain. Sucks getting older. Good luck to you.
