Running Game

Felton was inactive. I'm just saying the only guy who's primary function is lead blocking was inactive against a team who game planned (like a lot of teams do) to stop the run. The FB and several factors already posted contributed to a poor run game. The adjustability/adaptability was nice to see. I do think a "real" fullback should be active on gameday for when teams start game planning to stop our passing game. Feels weird to say that, but it's coming...

I think this line will slowly improve over time. Otah is still playing himself into (wait for it) "shape". Also, a talent infusion is still needed at RG eventually. I love Hangartner and all, but he is at best an average starter (physically limited), couldn't ask for a better interior swingman backup though.

DWill and Stewart haven't forgotten how to hit a hole if one is there.

And that's my take too.

Otah's nowhere near in the same physical form that he was before, and I'd be surprised if after what happened to him last year, if he'll ever be that beasty again. Feel the same about Hangartner. Not crazy about our centers either.

I like Gross, but that's about it right now. None of the guys are terrible. The problem is as a group and whole unit, they just don't add up to strong, dominating O-line that can either get a push on D's or block long enough for good pass protection.

We can keep talking about them needing more time to get chemistry but Christ....they have been at it for like 2 years now. How much time do they need? And someone always seems to get hurt anyway which screws up the whole chemistry.

The Pats sure as hell seem to have chemistry every year, day one, and they deal with injuries and shuffling around too. And other teams as well. What we need is new blood. Talented, and preferably younger, new blood to build around and protect Newton.

They played the run all game, blitzd run gaps and we played exactly how we were suppose to.... if teams try to stop cam now i have no doubt double trouble will run free

Carolina now has a double threat and i love it just like our playoff teams, run the ball chew up the clock and when they get mad we play action bomb to smith

I wanted to see more toss sweeps, see if our guys could get to the edge. I remember once where Deangelo tried to turn the corner but was bottled up. Maybe some delayed handoffs where Cam looks to throw, get the edge rushers pushed behind the play by the tackles, then hand off.

AZ was stacking the box and run blitzing. They essentially were daring Cam to pass. If Cam keeps up his QB play, teams will have to start respecting the run and things will open up. I think many here remember the year Double Trouble went off and they were able to run consistently against 8 man fronts. That is very abnormal and reality has set in. We can still run the ball but being able to dominate like we did in 09 will not happen every year.

People have to remember that our OL had been together for 6 days on game day. Otah had 10 snaps in all of preseason and Hangartner is moving from C to RG. The OL will be better as they log time together. I'm really not worried about the run game right now.

Also, though it's just one game Cam is already going to have an effect on how DC's approach our offense because of his performance against AZ. There's no doubting now that he can make you pay with his arm. I really, really hope we have someone step up as a second WR because that would make us very hard to stop.

I hope you are right b/c I am most concerned about our Oline's ability to open up holes. No doubt, JS and DW are studs, but they can't run though brick walls. It is frustrating to me when you see teams like Cincy that can run all over the place and they are not very good and are facing stacked boxes as well.

Well even if you are so dense you can't figure out the irony in the sentence....

...the little blue face at the end of it should have given it away.

And if you want me to be serious about it, then I will say that your argument may have worked 2 years ago to excuse their piss poor performance. There's no excuse anymore. There is no excuse for 4 sack and 56 yards of rushing from two of the more talented backs in the NFL on a day our QB passes for 422 yards.

Sorry, but that one just doesn't cut it. I'm pretty sure the Cards figured out we had a passing game after Newton burnt them for the first 300 yards. If a team is so stupid to not be convinced by that point.....then....GOOD. Let them be!

Even with the other team stacking the box, at some point during the 4 quarters of play the O-line needs to get you some penetration and some push for your run game. They just didn't make it happen. Just like they didn't last year.

PS: We've never really NOT been one dimensional, even when we had a decent passing game. We were still a run heavy team, even when Delhomme and company had a passing game. Teams still expected us to run the ball 2 out of 3 times and that's exactly what we would do. But they couldn't stop us from executing it. Our O-line just beasted through them right up the damn middle most of the time.

I think some of you really need a reminder of what a dominant O-line looks like:

You guys remember what we've done to AZ running the ball the past few time we've played them right?

They decided if they were going to lose it would be via the passing game, and we weren't up to the task and they won. Effective gameplan on their part.

The 422 yards were great and I'm excited to see this team progress, but when you get that kind of yardage you should have more than 21pts.

They flooded us with run dog and jail break blitzes that game. We adjusted and punished them in the passing game. I dont think thats going to stop much untill teams know Cam can light the score board up. He did well but I think more teams will think Dwill and Jstew are more dangerous.
