Running Game

After Steve Smith burns a few more teams for 175+ yds & multiple TD's & they realize Cam Newton is the real deal our running game will explode. As long as team's are putting 8 in the box Chud will have Cam gun slinging. Once teams drop into coverage & double Smith it'll be double trouble & triple option, bitches.

Yeah because that has anything to do with what I said. If there's 8 in the box throw the ball. If you are consistent enough completing passes against it there will no longer be 8 in the box then run the ball. This makes more sense then fox saying fug it im running regardless.

I think that one went over your head. My statement had nothing to do with you or your argument.

It was a perfect opportunity for me to humorously state what I believe to be our problem with our run game: our O-line.

If Cam continues to be on time and on target in the passing game the running game will improve. We have to get defenses away from the line of scrimmage. It was way to crowded Sunday thus nowhere to run
I think you may be on to something. We do need to figure out out a way to protect our O-line from our opponents' defenses;)

I say we run I formation and get Cam to act as an extra offensive guard. Maybe even help out at center. Might help.

yeah.....that's not what he's saying. some blocking schemes (esp. last year) will end up pulling guys towards the interior of the oline or at least drawing attention from defenders towards the middle and it ends up crowding the LoS and clogging up running lanes so RBs have nowhere to go.

There's not a big enough facepalm Rayzor. See above.

5 can't block 8 that's the problem. Even if you put a hat on a hat of the first wave the lanes you create are filled. You cannot run in the nfl when you don't have a respectable passing game plain and simple. Yes the o line needs work but when we threw the ball Sunday our back had to consistently pick up a free rusher to give Cam time. Who is available to pick that guy up on a running play when we don't have a fb in the game. That's not on the o line imo that is a defense specifically scheming to sell out to stop the run. Continue to beat teams through the air and watch how much "better" our line becomes on rushing plays

Alright. I'm gonna stick with my opinion if, that's ok.

But once again, I agree....

We need to get that O-line some protection.

PS: You see what I did there this time?;)

i didn't see it as a joke. more an attempt to not look like you didn't know what you were talking about. since it's a joke...ha.

if you have to explain a joke....nevermind.

anyway, the problem here isn't the oline. teams schemed against the run by stacking the box with 8 guys and blitzing constantly. like DoWorkBson said, 5 can't block 8.

the only thing that is going to really help open things up is for the passing game to be respected. cards didn't plan on having to respect it. no team respected out passing game last year. they knew that the only real strength we had was the run game so they allocated most of their resources towards stopping it. it was a gamble that paid off for every team that did it last year.

this year they went under the assumption that we were still going to be focusing on the run. sure we got a QB, but he was a rookie QB so there wasn't going to be much passing anyway. and then add to it cam is considered a "running QB" and there wasn't really anything he did in preseason to suggest he would be able to do much through the air. they were wrong.

still....they treated the panthers as a one dimensional team and they planned against it and made it nearly impossible for the oline to make holes for the run game. they took away that dimension, but didn't realize that there was another dimension that should have been respected as well and it almost cost them the game.

They tried and got stuffed repeatedly, even though I thought they should have tried hitting the edges more with some off tackle runs specifically to Otah's side. Anyways here's the pathetic rushing stats for the game

Deangelo Williams: 12 carries for 30 yards 2.5ypc

Jonathan Stewart: 7 carries for 26 yards 3.7ypc

They have got to do better creating holes, you can not put the whole offense on a rookie qb's shoulders especially when they didn't even pass protect well. The offensive coordinator made a good choice by passing so much, if he'd stayed with the run more you would have seen a lot more 3rd and 11s.

Well even if you are so dense you can't figure out the irony in the sentence....

"We do need to figure out out a way to protect our O-line from our opponents' defenses;)"

...the little blue face at the end of it should have given it away.

And if you want me to be serious about it, then I will say that your argument may have worked 2 years ago to excuse their piss poor performance. There's no excuse anymore. There is no excuse for 4 sack and 56 yards of rushing from two of the more talented backs in the NFL on a day our QB passes for 422 yards.

Sorry, but that one just doesn't cut it. I'm pretty sure the Cards figured out we had a passing game after Newton burnt them for the first 300 yards. If a team is so stupid to not be convinced by that point.....then....GOOD. Let them be!

Even with the other team stacking the box, at some point during the 4 quarters of play the O-line needs to get you some penetration and some push for your run game. They just didn't make it happen. Just like they didn't last year.

PS: We've never really NOT been one dimensional, even when we had a decent passing game. We were still a run heavy team, even when Delhomme and company had a passing game. Teams still expected us to run the ball 2 out of 3 times and that's exactly what we would do. But they couldn't stop us from executing it. Our O-line just beasted through them right up the damn middle most of the time.

I think some of you really need a reminder of what a dominant O-line looks like:
