Ron Fields and Reggie Wells?

I've been wondering if the majority of the fans on here that are cool with just rebuilding this year are mooching off mom and dad or some relative with PSL's. No I haven't set down and googled every single player out there but from what I've read it surely seems like there are better fits. Week 1 defense looked like all the other weeks in preseason! Jerry is the one that raised ticket prices so if he wanted to do that, then there needs to be a better solution than scraping the bottom of the barrel for somebody that isn't going to make things better. An accomplished vet like (like being the key word) Pat Williams can offer more than somebody who has just barely gotten by. Through play and coaching! Who would you rather be mentored by Fields or Williams? I say go preach that let's just focus on rebuilding crap to the group of fans shelling out good money each year. You can still try to win and rebuild at the same time!

Yeah, Williams is awesome. I wonder why no one has signed him yet......

I guess they are all stupid. Lets fire Hurney and make someone from the huddle the new GM. What do you think??? Want the job?? You seem to have it all figured out...............

You know, until today, no one had signed Fields or Wells either. Just sayin'. And a team that has only had 4 winning seasons in 16 years is allowed to be questioned. Sure Hurney wasn't there for all of it, and Rivera is brand spanking new, but we all need to stop suckling the teat of Marty Hurney.

And no one lobbied for Fields or Wells or thought they were all that great while I have read several Williams threads over the past month or two. THe point is that we are looking for a few guys to come in and fill holes on the line on either side of the ball and these guys are worth a look. Who knows they might be the best we can find. We apparently tried to go after some big names in the offseason but it didn't work out.

Hurney has been the GM for the past 10 years and has learned along the way. THis is his first GM gig and as such is a work in progress like the team. He seems to be making largely good decisions and with the exception of last year which was largely Richarson's fault drafted pretty well. In fact he he has more of his own draft picks starting for his team than anyone else in the league. That could have changed with the cuts and pickups this season but was true a month or two ago.

Nonetheless, he is pretty good at his job and while not perfect by a long shot is worthy of more respect than he gets from posters here who by and large are clueless to what goes on behind the scenes.

Plus Hurney brings in the talent but doesn't caoch the team. So perhaps his worth should be judged on the talent on the team not the wins and losses which are the baliwick of the coaches.

And no Hurney doesn't hire the coach in isolation. Richardson and Morrison had a lot to do with that as well.

In seriousness the first rounder should be whoever is best talent wise between the wr cb and dt I think.

I hope one of these DTs will pan out starter material. Doesn't even have to be flashy, just an efficient run stopper.

If we draft high enough & there is a WR with pro-bowl talent that's who we will pick. Steve Smith has plenty left in the tank, but we need a solid #2 & successor for #89. We have a franchise QB, now give him some weapons & keep him happy in Charlotte.

1st rd... WR

2nd rd... CB

3rd rd... OL

I would love to get Kalil but I doubt he's on the board when we pick. Edwards is on IR & we just spent two 3rds on DT's. I doubt we draft another one next year.

Tyler brayton

Hollis Thomas

Jeremy Shockey

Nail Diggs

Ed Johnson

Damione Lewis

Keyshawn Johnson

Keydrick Vincent

Vinny Testeverde

And how does Ron Fields fit on this list? The majority of the players on the list above are guys that either were highly drafted or had been very successful earlier in their careers.

Ron Fields may turn out to be a nice surprise, or just a role player, but he is not in the same mold of the players above.

Edit: And don't mistake questioning individual moves by Hurney with an overall assessment of his tenure as GM. We can like the body of work without liking a few specifics.

Being highly drafted has little too do with how successful you will be especially after the top 10 or 15 so that seems irrelevant. As for very successful you were almost right instead of :have been", you should have used the phrase "has been" to describe guys like Keyshawn and Testeverde. They were judged to be over the hill and too far gone to help out teams. Guys thrown on the scrap heap and glossed over. But Hurney came in and saw some potential and reclaimed them to good success.

How does Ron Fields fit that list. He is a journeyman who isn't starting material in many people's opinion who we reclaimed as a potential starter. If he passes his physical and has anything left, he will be the starter in the middle in two weeks or less. If he helps us out he will be another successful reclamation project for Hurney.

And who said you can't dislike some of his moves, after all he has made his share of mistakes. I think that you have to take the good the bad and judge him based on his body of work rather than nitpick and criticize because he has screwed up on occasion. He isn'tperfect by a long shot but if the criteria for praise is to make no mistakes, then no GM would qualify for any kudos ever.

And how do you know we are finished at NT. We might bring in someone else in the next few days. Many here rush to make a judgment often before they know all the facts.

I don't mind the Wells signing I guess...

Ron Fields is horrific though. If you're gonna sign a 30+ y/o DT, why not go with... I dunno... Pat Williams (live without him for 2 games, big deal), Jamal Williams, Marcus Stroud, Gerard Warren, Tommie Harris, etc. It's not like they can command much money considered they don't have jobs after the season has started. And even though they're all past their primes, this new guy didn't even have one. Ugh.

Maybe there is a reason these guys aren't picked up? Maybe Ron fricking Rivera has watched tape, had experience with, or has talked to other coaches that said these guys would be a bad fit. Maybe the people who do this for a living have inside knowledge that you don't.

It's possible. We may still be looking and negotiating. Some of the obvious names may be demanding more than they are worth, and for all we know, Marty is playing hardball.

I just know when I go back and review the game, it is glaring that we need to upgrade at NT. I like Fua, but feel he needs a bit more strength/conditioning, and maybe more bulk, before he will be very effective.

We are probably okay for now at the other tackle spot unless someone great happens to fall in our lap.
