Ron Fields and Reggie Wells?

You think there is a plethora of good vets waiting to be signed right now?

Wells has started 81 games btw...and Fields has started 25.

The Wells signing is a good one because he's good depth, but Im talking about the defensive tackle position.

ESPN Insider Ratings:

Reggie Wells:

Grade: 69 | Key

Comment: Wells missed much of the season with injury and was relegated to a backup position. He is a good combination of size, strength and athleticism for an interior lineman. He plays under his pads and can leverage blocks to get movement. He can chip off down blocks and bounce off to the second level to wall off linebackers. He uses his hands well and uses good initial quickness to gain leverage as a run blocker and maintains body positioning in pass protection. He has starting talent with lots of experience but will have to elevate his performance to secure a spot with the first offensive line.

Ron Fields:

Grade: 58 | Key

Comment: Fields has spent most of his career as a quality backup role player, although he did manage to work his way into a starting role with the Denver Broncos during the 2009 season. He is a wide body who can eat up a lot of space and is hard to move off the line, but shows limited lateral range and lacks the quickness needed to penetrate and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. He's still a bit inconsistent when it comes to recognizing blocking schemes and leveraging through blocks to squeeze the play down, but has improved his hand use when taking on and shedding blockers.

The Grade Key:

60-69 is an average starter

50-59 is a good backup

To compare they are ranked 31 and 83, respectively. For Guard, Wharton is a rated a 73 and Jean-Gilles is rated a 66. For DT, Ron Edwards was at 64 and Tommie Harris at 74.

I think Derek Landri is still out there too, and he didn't play bad last year.

I don't mind the Wells signing I guess...

Ron Fields is horrific though. If you're gonna sign a 30+ y/o DT, why not go with... I dunno... Pat Williams (live without him for 2 games, big deal), Jamal Williams, Marcus Stroud, Gerard Warren, Tommie Harris, etc. It's not like they can command much money considered they don't have jobs after the season has started. And even though they're all past their primes, this new guy didn't even have one. Ugh.

Maybe because these fat bastards didn't go to training camp and are likely weeks away from being in good enough of shape to play...

Some of you guys crack me up, complaining because the Panthers won't sign a legit starter at DT, Guess what!! There are no legit DT starters available, they're all on teams!! People keep screaming for Tommie Harris, why? Doesn't the fact that no one gave him a job before the season started tell you something?

Everyone passed on Harris, not just the Panthers.

Our staff knows what they're doing, they certainly know more than us.

He was cut because he played like the best defensive lineman the Colts had, and wanted to be treated as such and respected over the likes of Freeney and Mathis. He was cut for his attitude.

But we have Ron Rivera, a coach he respects immensely and who made him the player he is, and likely the only person coaching in the NFL who could return Harris to pro-bowl form.

But, ya know, Ron Fields will be just as good. Right?
