Building Through The Draft

Recommended Posts

more WRs weren't needed but i get the point. there was still some value there that we might have missed out on.

in the long run we will see that otah is worth it. the dude is an absolute beast and it is an awesome thing to have the tackles that we do. we are going to be reaping the rewards from that for a long time. next year we are going to be needing it.

you have to remember that otah is still very new to the position and playing football. imagine how much more he is going to be able to do with experience and good coaching.

ok lets put it in the points system used for draft picks. That's how you tell if a trade was a good one or not. Pick wise.

29th first round, 43 selection in second round, 109th pick in fourth round

Eagles receive

29th = 640 points

43rd = 479 points

109th = 76 points

Panther's receive

19th pick = 875 points

Trade favors Philly, but we knew that when they made the trade.

It doesn't favor Philly as much as some people are making it out too.

I don't think we could get anything close to Otah in this draft.

It led to our running game being amazing and a playoff birth. Add to that we have our young Oline signed for some years and we are set there and shouldn't have to worry about it for some time.

Maybe we would've got a corner last year in the second (who would've been buried on the Depth chart, or maybe a Wr who as well would've been buried on the depth chart, we could have gotten a less elite Ot with that second rounder as well. We made out well with that trade, even though it favors Philly somewhat.

This should show everyone that Fox, Hurney and the F.O. staff have done a great job building this team. I remember when we first got them "Core Players" was the key word. Keeping our Core Player. For the most part they have. Witherspoon, Moose and a few other have slipped away but for the most part we have kept our talent.

Go Panthers

Agreed! Injuries have hurt the Panthers more than anything, And some people want to hold that against Coach Fox. Hell, in '07 I almost fell into that crowd but was talked off the ledge. :cheers2:to all for helping me to see the light.

We have had 57 Picks since 2002. 29 Are still Panthers (for now) 50.87% 37 are still in the NFL 64.91% (Finished the 08 season on a roster)

Our 1st Day picks 19 of 29 are still Panthers 65.51% 24 of 29 are still in the NFL 82.75%

We have had our Busts (see 03 and 05). But we have also done a great job keeping and developing talent. What amazes me is most of our picks from 07-08 are still with us.

The critics will say that Foster, Colbert and so on were mediocre or poor players. I don't dispute that but they are good enough to make different squads.

I think our numbers will match up to just about any team and would love to see figures like this.

But I think since we are evaluating the trade based on how things transpired over the past year, we also have to look at how well Otah has played and fit with the team (the benefit of this year's pick being taken last year). So, taking that into consideration, I believe he would be a top 10, and possibly top 5 pick if he came out this year (knowing that he transitioned well, and was a rookie success). In other words, he has shown he is a top ten (at worst) talent. Therefore, it comes down to whether or not a late 1st, mid 2nd and 4th round picks are good value for a high pick.

So, using the trade value numbers, and assuming Otah would go no later than 7th (I think he would actually go higher) the trade looks a lot better for the Panthers.

Eagles receive

29th = 640 points

43rd = 479 points

109th = 76 points

Total = 1195 points

Otah's value with a year of success under his belt

7th pick = 1500 points

So, based on what we know now, this turned out to be a good trade for the Panthers both in value and on-field performance.

I agree with your thinking but Im sure that Otah would be fighting Jason Smith for top lineman. He was a LT at Pittsburgh and does have good feet and balance for his size and a mean streak to boot if Jake Long can be a LT then im sure Otah can be a LT in this league. So he might very well could have been the number one pick def top three pick IMHO.
