Newton's Prototype

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I don't know that his style will evolve that much. Don't really care if it does, honestly.

Stylewise, I could be pretty happy with what I saw yesterday.

Given he has never played in a system more than 1 year, I don't know how he could exactly have a style. His own report is that he tries to borrow the best of everyone he admires.

I do expect him to grow and mature and his style to evolve as he gets more experience. Right now he is likely only 50% of what he will be in a year or two. And that is definitely exciting.

Again... your arguments against him pre-draft color your comments now. I can't take you seriously, as someone saying they are objective, no matter what you say you're happy about.

Feel free not to. I can't honestly say it will bother me that much :nonod:

Most of us are spending our time on here just enjoying the memories from yesterday rather than looking to pick fights over what we think someone might have maybe in a roundabout way said.

But if that's what floats your boat...

Yeah, saying our QB is not "Pin point accurate" after having a game with over a 64% completion rate and breaking a debut passing record isn't me picking a fight brah.

tbh, he doesn't have a prototype. he's a different type of running threat than Michael Vick, but just as effective. if a defense wants to blitz, he'll have games like he had yesterday. if they try to take away the passing game, he'll put up 100-150 yards on the ground.

when he gets more comfortable running the offense, he'll be a DC's worst nightmare......if he isn't already.

How many times will this question pop up? Once a week?

Why does the OP think being a pocket passer and being a dynamic runner/playmaker are mutually exclusive?

I don't. Never did. Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers, Steve McNair...all of these guys were/are capable passers who just also happen to be able to run.

Have said before, and will say again:

- Quarterbacks that can pass and run are gold.

- Quarterbacks that can pass but can't run are silver.

- Quarterbacks that can run but can't pass are fool's gold.

Frankly, if you based your opinion on yesterday's game, you'd actually have to say that Newton was a better passer than runner.

I don't agree that he is a gunslinger at this point. He really threw 2 ill-advised passes yesterday once which was picked off and counted, the other which did not. But to be a gunslinger you have to gamble a lot, throw into double and triple coverage and take chances with the ball often making ill-advised throws. I know it is early, but Newton hasn't taken very many chances. He has taken sacks when no one was open, ran with the ball when he had no other option, and threw it away other times.

The fact is that Newton has other weapons like running the ball which will mitigate him being a gunslinger. When the pocket closed, guys like Favre and Jake would throw it up hoping for the best. Newton brings the ball down and runs with it.

Things could change as he gets more experience and believes he can make throws he can't, but up to now he seems the opposite of a gunslinger. He will take a chance downfield but he rarely seems to throw into multiple coverages. Even when he does, it is likely more of a rookie mistake reading coverages then it is intentionally trying to force the ball.

Based on yesterday I don't see him in the Favre gunslinger mold myself, I just thought it was funny that Rayzor said pretty much the same thing as Mr. Scot but didn't get attacked for it.

It's a matter of opinion, really.

That's just the type of player I see him being. Not sure why some want to see that as a slight.

I guess if I said Steve Smith was more in the mold of Ricky Sanders than Jerry Rice or Michael Irvin, people would get pissed about that too
