Newton's Prototype

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Once again you frame your posts as so you can never be wrong. A lack of definitive opinions over the thousands of posts takes quite a bit of skill

Got plenty of opinions, but there's a difference between opinion and analysis.

Half the folks on here want to be Nostradamus. Many who try end up looking like Nostradumbass.

Me? I'd rather talk about what we can know for sure. I have little interest in being Dionne Warwick.

I thought he looked pretty accurate. His one gunslinger throw got picked off. Everything else was placed perfectly. On the first TD to Smitty, Steve slowed down a little because Cam saw him late, but the throw was perfect. There were a few incompletions where the ball went right through the hands of the recievers. He looked like an elite passer last night. I don't expect that every game, but we will see it again if he's asked to throw as much as he did last night. He's way more accurate than people give him credit for. A lot of people are still trying to downplay his passing skills and record breaking rookie performance.

Vick and young didn't make the decisions or keep their eyes downfield like Cam did last night. At least not as rookies.

Vick doesn't Have the height to see downfield like Newton does. Young has the height, but not the discipline.

If he works on playing like he did yesterday, shows steady improvement and keeps from getting injured, I think Newton Can be better than both.

Prefer? Not really. Given the choice, I'd pick a pure pocket passer like a Manning or a Brady. Favre/Elway/Delhomme types are a roller coaster.

But can you win with this type of quarterback? Take a look at the ring fingers of Favre and Elway for the answer to that one.

And that's the true bottom line for me. I don't really care if Newton sets passing records. I care a great deal whether or not he quarterbacks us to a Super Bowl win.

If I had to pick a person he reminds me of right now its Favre and Elway. Somebody else he reminds me of is Matthew Stafford also.

I think you're getting something that some others haven't.

Comparisons to Elway, Favre and Delhomme have to do with style of play, not level of success or ability.

Technically, Rex Grossman is a gunslinger type too, but that's a comparison I'd rather avoid

Newton's not a pinpoint accurate passer

Wow... one game under his belt, and you're still making this assertion...

And the funny thing is, even in that one game, he technically has a better regular season career completion % than Tom Brady.

If you're making that judgement on his preseason play, I seriously .

Of course, I'm sure over the next few weeks we will see his numbers become averaged out as we face some of the toughest teams in the NFL.

But really... comparisons at this point are premature as hell. What I haven't seen from Cam in any of his games as a Panther yet (including preseason), is his explosiveness from the pocket. It looks like they have trained him to stay in the pocket (which is a good thing).

You just wait until they call a designed run play and he turns on the jets. Cam Newton will not be comparable to anyone... because we will see there is no one like him in the league, and I honestly don't believe this league has seen anything like him before.

None of them fit.

Cam's prototype? Cam Newton

No NFL QB has ever had the combination of his size, speed, ability, and leadership.

I don't remember the actual numbers on sacks/hits/hurries and so forth but he was under an incredible amount of pressure. To hang in there and throw for 422 yards was amazing.

Arizona's game plan was pretty good but as Cam grows that will be more of a death sentence than a solid defensive plan.

The key work in your comment is leadership. I have felt all along that Losing will not be acceptable and he will find a way to win. He almost did it in his 1st game. You can bet your butt, he will win a few games at the very end more than once.

Go Cam

The Future so bright ya gotta wear shades.

Some of y'all sound like you think this is a bad thing. Not sure why.

You folks do remember that Favre and Elway won Super Bowl rings and MVP trophies, right? And while Jake Delhomme didn't get to that level, he won a load of games and took this team to it's first Super Bowl.

Just sayin'...Newton isn't a Manning or Brady type. Don't expect him to be. And I'm not a fan of the Roethlisberger comparisons either because I think he's overrated. Ditto with Vick and McNabb because I think Newton (potentially) has the tools to be a better passer than both of them if he keeps going.

If he can be what he is, and be another Favre/Elway, we should All be happy.

Don't think that those comparisons are that close. Elway was largely inaccurate through most of his career. His rookie year he completed 47.5% of his passes for a 54 rating and had 7 TDs and 14 INTs and 1666 yards. Newton is a quarter of the way there after 1 game. He was very accurate last night. Although I will admit that Elway had 2 very good games to start out his rookie year.

As for Favre, he has the saame arm strength from an arm strength and a gunslinger point of view but he is not as athletic as Newton by a long shot. On the other hand if he does half of what Favre did in his career I will be fine with it.

And finally Jake had the intangibles and leadership skills that Newton has but didn't have the physical skills. Jake doesn't have the deep ball that Newton does nor doees he have the accuracy or arm strength on out routes.

No at this point Newton has similarities to a lot of Qbs but few if any QBs have the total package. Lets see what he does with it as it is only at the beginning.
