Game Thoughts - Week 1

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Certainly no one in their right mind is going to expect a performance like that every week. Next week will probably be quite a bit uglier.

And yes, there have been plenty a number of outliers over the years from a statistical standpoint, but the odds are against that.

It is far more likely, based on what we saw today, that if we surround Cam with a good team he will perform very well, and that is more than we could say about a QB in awhile.

Hopefully. Again, just one game. I need a bigger sample before making a more permanent judgment.

Look at it this way. Suppose Cam had come out and had one of the worst rookie performance of all time. Right response would have been to look at all the factors (lack of OTAs, rebuilding team, etc) but the more likely response would have been people saying "he sucks" and declaring him a bust.

That, too, would have been unfair based on only one game. But again, groupthink.

I'm just happy to have a chance to smile while watching Panthers football again. I don't expect Cam to be a world beater every time he takes a snap, but I am thankful for the game he gave me yesterday, and I am eager to see his progression as a pro QB. I think he has the tools, and I think he has the coaches. Now let's see what they can build together! Yeah, the ride may not be pretty sometimes, but I'm willing to roll with it to see the end result.

If you can't figure out what is special about that performance from a mechanically flawed project, that would need at least a year to learn an NFL offense, that had never taken a snap under center, had bad footwork, is a running QB, was a one read and run QB in college so would have trouble adjusting, who is too inaccurate, that probably should have sat out in favor of Derek Anderson week 1 (all things you have told me the last few months BTW)

Well then I can't help you :nonod:

My problem might be that I listen to you guys too much

I'll take sixteen consistent performances over one great one every time.

Yesterday was great, but still just the beginning. I've read many a book with a great first chapter but a lousy ending. The story of a lot of NFL careers has read like that too Likewise, many guys that have had lousy starts have gone on to greatness. That's why nobody should be applying a bust label or carving a bust for Canton after just one game.

He's not the second coming of Johnny Unitas just yet. Enjoy yesterday for everything it was, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

The future looks bright, and that's good enough for me.

on the King TD.. There were a couple of mishaps on that play that made it happen. Davis had Kolb dead to rights but slipped allowing Kolb to get out of the pocket and hit King. There is no way had Beason not injured his ankle, that Jeff would've reached the endzone. Beason was closing fast when his injury happened...

I think he's just saying let's not get lost in the clouds and expect those numbers every week. Now, we know what he's capable of. I would put myself in the cautiously optimistic category also.

Sounds more like "Be hesitant to enjoy Newton's actual performance THIS week, because he MAY not do as well next week."

That is a sure recipe for always being miserable.

Actually, that's exactly the kind of thing a football coach tells his players (and wisely so).

Truth be told, that's probably one reason why, even as a fan, I'm still always looking forward. My coaches from pee-wee through high school always hammered that point home.

As the saying goes, you get 24 hours to either celebrate or sulk, then it's on to the next game.

Wise words for THE ATHLETES THAT ARE PLAYING THE GAME.

Maybe you'd get more enjoyment out of the game itself if you remembered that you were no longer on the field but in the stands (or your living room).

Being a FAN is fun.

Great write up, very accurate and well written.

Also, yes, I know the exact look from Rivera you were talking about and I said the same thing.

He is a skurry looking man, but that is a good thing. Id rather have him getting pissed off and yelling at everyone and motivating instead of chewing gum and clapping the whole time.

Not likely to happen

To paraphrase John Fox, I is what I is, and I'm happy with that.

I do have fun watching the games. I just also have fun analyzing them.

(if I wasn't having fun, would I write this much?) :sosp:

I'm sorry if this is kind of off topic, but it has to do with my thoughts on the game in a way since I was there in person.

My girlfriend surprised me with tickets to yesterdays game. Being from Los

Angeles, we made the 6 hour drive to Glendale to finally witness my beloved Panthers play live for the first time in my life. The game was incredible, Cam was outstanding. I had a great time even though i was shaking with nerves every minute of the game.

But let me get to the reason why I made this post. The Arizona Cardinals fan base is the most classless group of people I have ever witnessed in my damn life. Worse than anything I've ever heard from Oakland, and besides the recent beating at Dodgers stadium, I've never seen any fan base treat the visiting fans this way...

I sat next to all Cardinal fans, And from the moment I got to my seat until the moment I got to my car I received nothing but pure hatred. I had a group of guys in front of me tell me to shut the F up before they F'd me up. I had a drunk guy next to me intentionally hit me in the head with his Cardinals towell over and over after they scored until I had to physically rip it from his hands. I had several different drunk women who had no football knowledge whatsoever bitch me out whenever I cheered. Another group of guys behind me tried to take my sign and rip it at the end of the game. Once I left the stadium I was called out by a handful of Cardinal fans talking pointless, unnecessary, smack to me all the way to my car. I even had a guy follow me 100 yards trying to make fun of going to a football game with my girlfriend. He literally went out of his way to call me out, try to make my girlfriend feel uncomfortable, and tried to start a fight with me.

And the most disgusting act I witnessed was right in front of the stadium after the game. Two mexicans in Cardinal clothing, both Cardinal fans, started a HUGE fight between multiple guys resulting in lots of bloody faces and lots of tazoring. I can not believe it wasnt on ESPN.

It was my first game ever, so I dont know if thats how it always is. But I know for a fact that I will never attend a game at that stadium. I am absolutely disgusted with that fan base until further notice.

Its also one cheesy-ass stadium. I went out there for the BCSCG last Januray. The stadium kinda looks cool on TV along with the idea of its "sliding" field, but IMO the inside of the stadium itself along with its concession venues suck ass.

Plus it seems like the footing on the field still sucks. Players were sliding all over the place in the BCSCG in January and I *still* saw players losing their footing on that field yesterday.

A cheesy venue for a cheesy organization.

    • Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.
    • Since we play the Panthers today and tmrw, we will have one gigantic double thread for both games. Today’s game is at 3pm and tmrw is 7pm.    After beating the Rangers and sending the those yankee bastards back to Cary, we get the Champs in the house.  Clean up the defense, no more lazy clears, and score baby score.  LFG CANES!
