Cam Newton Makes It Look That Easy

His Carolina Panthers lost 28-21, but it wasn't the usual, mind-numbing kind of defeat that characterized last season's two-win team. That's because last season's team didn't have Newton.

Afterward, Newton, wearing dress socks, a T-shirt and shorts, sat in a folding chair in front of his locker and stared straight ahead. He hadn't lost a game since Oct. 31, 2009, when his Blinn College team lost to Navarro College. Since then, nothing but W's -- until Sunday.

He sat in that chair, elbows on knees, as the rest of the Panthers dressed and made their way to the team's charter bus. Told that Newton seemed to be taking the loss hard, tight end Greg Olsen said, "I don't know why. He was a big reason why we had a chance.''

Minutes later, Olsen walked over to Newton and offered some encouraging words. Not that it mattered much. Newton isn't used to being on the wrong end of the scoreboard.

"What you want me to say: It feels great?'' Newton said to reporters later. "It's not a comfortable feeling for me.''

I love that competitive fire he showed, & the disappointment at losing, even when he played so well.

I thought I saw him Cry on the sideline after the loss. I love how much emotion he puts into a game. I know people say hes fake, Including myself but after watching him after the game the kid really does take the game to heart and I am very happy to have a kid with that much compassion playing for my team. I see a very bright future for this guy

We need to get this guy some better team mates ASAP because if this guy can play that good in his first game imagine what he is going to do in his career? We have to get some support for the guy.

A couple of memorable quotes from this piece

"I played against Newton last year,'' said Cardinals rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson, whose 89-yard TD punt return midway through the fourth quarter turned out to be the game-winner. "I told you guys from the beginning that he is a great athlete and is definitely going to be one of the greats in this league.''

"Cam is very disappointed,'' Smith said. "I'm encouraged by that.''

And so he was also encouraged by Newton's play and potential, right? Smith scoffed at the suggestion.

"So 'encouraged' is selling him short,'' Smith said. "And I'm not going to sell him short.''

Newton didn't do what he wanted, which was make possible a Panthers' comeback. But he did something almost as important.

He made believers.

Cam made it look easy because there were times I actually FORGOT that he was a rookie. A couple throws, like the 2nd TD pass, or the pass to Olsen that lead to Newton's eventual rushing TD, or the pass to Smitty on the sideline where he just couldn't quite get that one foot down, whereI was like "there we go!" and while I was celebrating, it hit me, "oh poo, he's a fuging rookie. this is awesome!"

We're set at QB for a loooong time! Just need to get the rest of the pieces there. Get the OL blocking (I am sure they will come along as the season progresses) and the defensive holes fixed, and boys, we are gonna be good.

You know Green Bay is gonna watch that film and the coaching staff, in the coaches meeting, are just gonna be . Then Dom Capers is going to look at the staff and say "boys...we in trouble..."

I might have to go as far as changing to a Cam avatar.

Dude, after today I'm wearing Cam Newton socks, undershirts and boxer briefs.

I'm taking a penalty on withdrawing my 401K and investing it straight into Cam Newton. I will start my mornings with Cam Newton, grains and fresh fruit. Cam Newton today, tomorrow and forever more.

Till he messes up, of course.

I don't know about any one else, but Cam has brought back extreme excitement that I used to get every Sunday when the panthers played. I know we lost today, but It so much better not feeling that false hope I used to get every Sunday during football season the last couple of years.

How bad was it when every time your offense was on the field the last 2 seasons you were scared what was going to happen next a pic or a fumble, jimmy not taking a shot farther than 5 yards on a 3rd and 10.

It just blows my mind that cam is only going to get so much better of the next couple of years!
