McDermott's Defense

I was careful to not get caught up in the McDermott mania when he joined the team because that defense had gotten a lot worse.

We still need help at DT so those LBs can make it to the QB but everyone has to remember that our team is prob the most behind because of installing a new system and having to deal with injuries. I know injuries happen but when your behind and learning a new system it takes its toll.

I was most disappointed in the tackling... That is fundamentals and should not happen. I have a feeling Rivera is going to rip some guys a new one for this game.

Something everyone seems to be forgetting is Kolb has seen our D more than our own players.

the defense had shown that formation quite a few times all game.. every time the LBers stepped back into coverage.

I'm assuming McDermott thought the OLine would fug up the protection and 2 Lbers would run through untouched..

of course that didn't happen, but he still had a safety to make the tackle.. my main gripe out that call was not putting a guy on Doucet when the offense came out in a 5 WR set..

I've been a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE Gamble supporter.. however tonight, Gamble gave those "haters" a LOT of ammunition tonight. he did just as good as if Munnerlyn were on Fitz with safety help. I've tried to convince folks Gamble was a top 10 CB, however he did NOTHING close to that tonight..

That is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. Gamble was lined up in man coverage 50%-60% of the game on Fitzgerald and held him to 3 catches for 62 yards and 0 TD's. We had 3 receivers with more yards then Fitz in the game, if the rest of our secondary played as well as Gamble then King doesn't score and neither does Doucet. Gamble deserves a ton of credit for how he played Fitz and he definitely played like a to 10 CB in that game, no doubt.

This season with the lockout and all is about learning a new scheme and deciding if you have the correct players to run the new scheme.

That call was a gamble

Pressure was needed on the QB with 5 WR set

Otherwise QB would pick the defense apart

Panthers Blitz the LB's B/C the Rookie DT's could not produce pressure

That started the problem,

Then it was a mental error in coverage , just like the Jeff King catch

Defense will be watching a lot of filn this week and try to figure out who 's suppose to be where.

Hopefuly Tuesday Panthers will be signing a few Vets on defense

Completely wrong on Doucet's TD. That was a HORRIBLE defensive call by McDermott. You do not sell out blitz (and show it from the break of the huddle) on 3rd and 7 from the Arizona 20. He completely gave up the middle of the field....and showed Kolb the play from the start. Any QB would have checked to that pass...there was no defense.

This is why McDermott was run out of Philly. He can be recklessly agressive at the wrong time.....which he was a few times today.

You are 100% correct.... before the snap I was like "Oh sh*t". I told my son watching the game with me that "this is not gonna turn out good". They totally showed it was coming and I think only had 3 guys in coverage, with NOBODY in the middle of the field.

I also felt like none of the blitzing worked. I even think they blitzed on the King TD. I dont understand what it is about this team but they never seem to be effective at running the blitz. You would hope with the new coaching staff, etc that would have improved, and I am sure it will over time.

In this particular game I even think at one point the announcer had pointed out how the defense was doing better when it was playing coverage and only rushing 4, and at times only 3. Dont know why they didnt just continue doing that. I think if not for the horrible, ineffective blitzing by our defense the Panthers win that game.
