Godfrey Extended

I find it odd that we have people complaining about Godfrey giving up big plays. If I remember right, we've actually been pretty good at not allowing long passes. For a team that sucked in about all aspects of the game last year, it's mindboggling there's actually something we could overreact about. But apparently there is.

I guess every team besides the Steelers and Ravens hates their safeties and uses them as scapegoats.

I don't think they would be doing this unless Rivera liked what he saw from Godfrey. I thought he was solid in preseason. $5.5 million per year isn't bad for a guy coming off a 5 INT season with potential to blow up.

It does come out of left field, sure, but it probably shouldn't. I've never been as hard on Godfrey as some here; safeties are tough to judge in coverage because they're so dependent on the play of the corner on their side of the field. Godfrey is, at worst, an average cover safety and solid against the run - Hillis trucking aside - but as joat said, Hillis trucked a LOT of guys last year.

This could be a genius move in a year or two when the insane contracts start being doled out after the new TV deal/salary cap if Godfrey has a break out season, which they obviously view him capable of.

i remember when godfrey was suppose to be a regular part of wfnz during the season to answer fan questions and talk about the previous week. he regularly no-showed and left the station hanging. half the time he didnt even bother to call.

part of being a leader is accountability. its alot harder to show up after a loss and talk to the fans and answer questions on a radio show and t.davis or beason always showed up and are willing to talk about whats wrong.

congrats to him on the extension as i think good run support safety who id like to see involved more with blitzing.

Shockey is too injury prone.

This is largely a misconception.

In his 9 years in the league, he has played in 121 games, or about 13.4 per year. And this has been very consistent...over the last 4 years, he has missed 3 games a year on average.

So odds are, we will get 13 games out of him this year on the field, and 16 games out of him as a positive influence on our team.

For what he is being paid, that is a bargain.

Someone posted earlier we were good at not giving up big plays! WHHHAATTT? 2 games back a 3rd round rookie QB from Texas Christian ( I still don't really know who he is!) hooked up with another rookie for a 40 yard bomb resulting in a td. That was the longest that I can recall thus far, but there have been more long completions we have given up just this preseason. Dixon ate our DB's up the last game! Backups or not they are professionals right? Oh and throw in alot of long runs. I didn't see Giants game but Miami, Cincey, and Pittsburgh ran it down our throats at times. Oh and I think when the other team's offense only has to run the ball twice for an easy first down back to back to back, then that's giving up big plays.

It was the pre-season. Let's see what happens when it counts.
