Godfrey Extended

And just so you know, Godfrey didn't get "Top Money".

for comparison

Chargers agreed to terms with FS Eric Weddle on a five-year, $50 million contract with $19 million guaranteed.

Behind Eric Berry's bloated rookie deal from 2010, Weddle now has the richest contract for a safety in league history. Though Chargers fans haven't been satisfied with Weddle's turnover rates -- he has six interceptions in four seasons -- he's arguably the best run-support free safety in football and not usually a liability in pass coverage. San Diego has an extremely good-looking secondary on paper with Weddle and Bob Sanders "inside," and Antoine Cason and Quentin Jammer on the corners. Now, they need to generate a better pass rush

And to dispel something rather quickly, I want to know who said disagree with the team makes you less of a fan. I want specific examples because I think its BS.

i spent years disagreeing with the team on keeping fox around, holding on to players for too long well after their prime while ignoring the growth and development of younger players by not giving them opportunities to play, for playing too soft on both sides of the ball, and keeping heads in the sand regarding the changing landscape of the NFL. there have been lots of things.

this year i think they are doing things right. there might be a couple things i wished they had handled differently, but they have shown me that they are heading in the right direction by keeping players who will help them win and replacing players who won't. by being bold in selecting newton and giving him the opportunity to start. by hiring a smart and aggressive minded HC who has brought in an equally smart and aggressive staff of coaches who do well at helping players develop.

if someone disagrees with me and the direction the team is going, it might make them narrow minded (lol j/k), but it doesn't make them any less of a fan than it did me when i didn't like the direction the team was going.

what i did, though, was try to get on board with things and come into each season optimistic that things would work out better than i really thought they would. did i set myself up for disappointment? most years, yes... but it's worth it. that just goes along with the territory of being a fan. you get your hopes up that this year is the year and usually you come away a little disappointed, but there are those moments when things work out well. in spite of it all, you just don't give up hope that your teams big moment is right around the corner.

DT vet isn't going to happen till after the first week, that way his contract isn't guaranteed. It's pretty simple and should be expected.

Duh. Still, if it's a "vet", who's proven he "can play", and the trend this year is giving guys "one year" deals, then you may as well have gotten one before the first game, instead of being cheap on what you really need (another DT) and wasteful on what you don't (extending Godfrey wasn't urgent).

Now if Godfrey's new contract opens up some more money to spend this season, then I could change my position on doing it right now, but not on not bringing in an upgrade at DT who will be on the team all season, regardless (unless he gets injured, of course, but these extended players could just as easily get injured).

He knows that, he's just here to whine. I have yet to see him do anything else.

You call it whining, I call it the truth.

If Hurney had brought in a good vet DT, you all would be beating your chests talking about how great a move it was, but since he didn't you call it whining for others to be pissed that he didn't.

Maybe you should quit being a hypocrite.

It does give a little more room, added into that the team released Giles and the team should have around 5 million in cap now. Only had a little over 3 million as of last week in cap room.

Where's the proof it was only 3mil? Someone else posted it was closer to 8 before Godfrey's surprise extension was announced. I know almost 2 weeks ago ProfootballTalk had the Panthers at around $8 million under the cap.

Who brought it down to 3 over the last two weeks? Butler & Ham?

I've seen a few reports that it was at 3.1 million.

That was the latest one I could find.
