PC game suggestion

I think JOT is looking more for a balanced sim game rather than a resource/strategy/war game, given that he used to love AOE. Building more of a community where warfare is a big aspect but there are other things to take care of as well. AOE is a classic, I would just get that again, JOT it is still fun and considered a great game. Be careful with the newer sim/strategy games because they will list the minimum requirements but as city and building gets more thorough things will slow down quick and it will take pretty high specs to be able to run smoothly, bad FPS will ruin a strategy game QUICK.

So what you need to look for is an older game that has a lot of content but the graphics do not require a modern engine to run. I personally recommend Sim City 4: Deluxe edition. There is a huge community revolving around this game and plenty of content. There isn't 'warfare' so I guess it is more of a sim game, I saw it on sale for like 5 bucks to download to your hardrive somewhere and I think it is worht every penny. AOE 3 would be my choice if you need to add some warfare.

A game that will top both of them is Civilization 5, however like I said this is one of those games that says it does not have high requirements for your system but you will in fact need a hefty video card mixed with a fast processor to get the most from this game, so look into that is you have a 1 gb memory card and a i5+ processor.

My laptop has an i3 and upgraded video card and Sim City 4 works great...just enough power but sometimes I feel it slack just a hair.

JOT...did you ever play Dino-park in grade school...Oregon trail...:) Hope I helped, if you have a banging PC let me know I have much better, more modern suggestions these games really require a lot, not to play but to build huge cities, to the MAX so be careful in choosing them.

Try out some Indie Games. They're usually cheap and I'd rather help them out while they're trying to make a decent game than say.. Activision and EA.

For MOBAs, League of Legends is free. (as is Heroes of Newerth now.. but HoN players take poo too seriously..), Dota 2 is coming out soon. MOBAs can play similarly to FPSs sometimes, but require a small element of strategy(mostly from ganking) and a persistent metagame like RPGs and RTS games, but there is no real micomanaging(unless you count denying, which is only in DOTA and HoN).

For RTS games, I can't really say much on them cuz I blow so hard at them. They're fun to watch people play during some competitions and streams though. SC II is pretty popular though.

Over the last year, I've completely shifted over from being a console gamer to a PC gamer again. Games are so much cheaper and you get better deals on them. Strangely enough, a lot of newer games and games branded with "Games for Windows" and such have a function that allow you to use a 360 controller if you're not comfortable with the keyboard and mouse (Blasphemy! say the PC gamers.) I think wired 360 controllers work, but you need a wireless adapter for the wireless ones. It comes in handy when you play platformers or you just wanna use a controller for fps games.

Steam typically has pretty good deals, week in and week out, as does EA's thing called Origin (which I haven't used yet but i get emails about them).

And try out Bastion. (although i guess watch a trailer or review first)

46- Yes, we used to play the hell out of some Oregan Trail, WTF is a JOT?

Thanks for the rest. This is a brand new laptop and while it certainly wasn't high dollar I think it has decent specs. I remember when I paid 4500 for my first comp, non pentium, 16 megs of ram with a 14.4 modem, it was hella cool.

My brother actually bought me this laptop for my Bday, it's one of the Toshiba Satellites and so far I love it. My only two complaints are the speakers and this thing that appears under the pointer that I can't get to go away. I've looked everywhere.

lol JOT=jackof(all)trades guess I forgot the A.

fuging awesome link to the Civ 5 download for that cheap price! I am buying it just to have until I build my new PC this winter.

If you have a laptop, do what I suggested and find the older games with lots of content but don't need an elaborate system. Civ 5 will suck on any laptop once you get into it unless you have a $2000 alien ware, even though the specs don't tell you this.

The best games are meant for a PC because of many reasons. So your laptop will limit you.

No need to worry, AOE 3 is still a classic for laptops as is SimCity.

I figured you played Oregon Trail and I assume your tastes are very similar to mine. Seems like you'd get bored with some games over others and you want something to dive into and not 'figure out'.

You just can't go wrong with the older classics. I love red alert and star craft etc. But they are pure resource warfare (who can click around most efficiently) rather than actually managing all aspects of a community and warfare. I think you'll get bored with those and AOE and SimCity4 is so much cheaper!

Indie games can be great and much more complex, like wurm, but those games are always half figuring things out and half playing. Like a puzzle game mixed with a strategy.

The two types are real time strategy (simcity, AOE) and turn based strategy (civ 5). In turn based you make all your decisions and then hi 'play'. This gives you more of a strategic feel, always thinking about your next move. Real time, you always have to be on your toes.

I just have a feeling you have very similar tastes to mine and you will get bored/become unmotivated without the right game.

BTW your laptop cannot handle anything after 05 and even some games around then (like civ 5) won't play well. Look for games in 00-03, and of course most the red alerts are always pretty good, especially the 90s,00s era. (1996 C&C>all)

Only thing I like more that strategy games are RPGs, even if they supposedly suck lol, not sure if you do as well. All I play are strategy and RPGs. I am waiting for Obvliion...god I just can't fuging wait and of course I am getting Tribes: Ascend more becasue I love the tribes series...you;ll need a very high tech comp for that one.

Somebody needs to make a fuging modern dino-park that game was fuging amazing for it's time and I think it would be kick ass for the modern era.

Tycoon has great strategy gams (tycoon zoo, tycoon roller coaster) as well. WCII is also a great classic.

The more modern Warfare type strategy games Total War, Warhammer, Company of heroes.

Perhaps the best older RTS warfare game I have ever played that had a MASS of content and was just an all outright under-appreciated game was TOTAL ANNIHILATION. You CANNOT go wrong getting this game...I promise.

Sorry for the long post I love these fuging games way too much.

Check the minimum system specs for Civ V before purchasing. You can turn a lot of the settings down and play on the minimum specs okay (One of my two finishes in that game were on a comp with the minimum specs) but you lose some of how good the game can look that way.

Not that it matters, but because it can get confusing when shopping for games, typically Sim City is not classified as real time strategy, even though it is both real time and a strategy game. RTS is a title typically reserved for a certain genre of games like AoE, C&C, WC, SC... games where there are basically three objectives: resource control, tech advancement (through buildings etc), and combat. Sim City is more of a simulation city builder. That being said, Sim City is an awesome game and hella fun to play.

I preferred Civ IV for whatever reason, so if Civ V can't run well on the laptop, you can always pick that up instead!

There's also Age of Empires Online now, which is free to play. Never tried it though. (http://www.ageofempiresonline.com/)

League of Legends. Its free to play and similar to RTS style of play. If you have ever played the WCIII mod DOTA, it is very similar to that. (Makers of LoL made DOTA)

It is classified as a massie online battle arena (MOBA)

I have been hooked for a while now. If you want to give it a try let me know. I can send you a referral.

one of the shittest makers of the original dota made LoL,

and it shows.
